[net.sport.baseball] White Sox and Winning Ugly

>Where did the Chicago White Sox come up with the
>saying "Winning Ugly", and what does it mean?

Back in late August, the White Sox went into Texas to play a four
game series which was to be followed by a three game series with the K.C.
Royals. The Sox were about 4 or 5 games in front of the Rangers and Royals.
When they got into Texas a reporter asked Dave Rader, the Ranger's manager,
what he thought of the White Sox' success and their chances to continue on
to a divisional title. He replied that while they had been winning, they
had been winning ugly, i.e. they had been scoring three runs on three or
four hits and hadn't really been hitting the cover off the ball. Well, the
Sox took three of four from the Rangers and the Chicago papers picked up
on the "winning ugly" quote. Then some signs started appearing in Sox park
and finally T-shirts were printed and "winning ugly" became the Sox' motto.
Please excuse me for rambling a bit at the end; I know you just asked how
the expression got started, but I love dem White Hosers and I think they
should get more exposure on the net. By the way, last night (9/15), they
broke three records, two when Greg Luzinski homered. That set the record
for both a two-man home run combo and a three-man home run combo. Ron
Kittle has 32, Luzinski has 30, and Carlton Fisk has 25. The '77 Sox had
Oscar Gamble-31, Richie Zisk-30, and Eric Soderholm-25. The third record
broken last night was for most runs scored in an inning when they scored
11 in the 6th. GO SOX. WINNING UGLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Winning ugly comes from a statement made by the Texas Rangers (?)
manager Doug Radar. Recently before a series with the White Sox, he stated
that the Sox were "Winning ugly and couldn't wait for their bubble to burst."
The Sox promptly beat the Rangers and "Winning Ugly" has become the theme
for the Sox!

Not to afraid to admit that I am an "Ugly" fan.

I believe the phrase was coined by the manager of the
Texas Rangers during their last series in Texas. It was
not intended in a particularly derogatory fashion.
