Appearances to the contrary, there is a lot of strategy involved every time a batter comes to the plate, and on every pitch thrown to the batter. The team on the field knows his particular habits, whether he will usually swing on a first pitch that looks anything close, whether he will try to pull the ball, if he is likely to bunt, or whatever. Likewise the batter (and his manager and coach) have charted what kinds of pitches the pitcher throws well, likes to throw, and is likely to throw, along with the different ball/ strike counts with each; they also chart different catchers for what pitch they call in a given situation. If anyone thinks they can make it in the majors on just raw physical skill - FORGET IT! Larry Bickford, {ihnp4,ucbvax,decvax}!decwrl!qubix!lab
