about a month ago i read somewhere that it was possible, albeit rare, for a batter to amass four (count 'em, 4) strikes. apparently it happened last in 77 or 78. the article didn't say how (or maybe it did, but i forgot, as i also forgot where i read it). as you can see, i don't follow baseball real closely, but this phenomenon has piqued my curiousity now to the point of obsession. someone tell me, please, HOW IS IT POSSIBLE?? thanks. ken perlow ..!ihnp4!ihuxq!ken

if it's indeed impossible for a batter to amass 4 strikes in 1 appearance under ANY circumstances, the question may have asked about four strike-outs in 1 inning & i misread it. that, of course, is easy if the catcher drops any of 3 third strikes. sorry.

The possible situation is: 1. Runner (B1) on 1st (2nd, 3rd). 2. 2 Outs. 3. Batter (B2) get 2 strikes and then runner is thrown out attempting to steal next base. 4. B2 will lead off the next inning and if he strikes out he will have gotten 5 strikes. David W. Berry amd70!fortune!berry cbosgd!... harpo!... hpda!...
