D. F. Webster says that the sixth hit can be scored when, after the bases are loaded, the runner on third apparently scores, but is called out on appeal for having missed home plate. This isn't right. According to the rules, the base hit is taken away when the runner from third is called out on appeal (rule 10.06b). I do, however, agree with the sixth hit, when the ball hits the runner and the runner is called out for the third out of the inning. So, I stand corrected. I thought it was only possible to get 5 hits in an inning without scoring a run. Good job, Jim Hendricks.

Another way to have the sixth hit is for a runner to be passed on the bases. (Cub oldtimer fans should know of whom I'm thinking.) If the batter has reached first, it's a hit.
