1) I heard a quote from Pete Rose this morning that he was glad
to get out of Baltimore's Mud Bowl and get back to playing
"real baseball" at Philadelphia's Veteran Stadium.
Well, Petey, you seem to offer a dissenting opinion after all
the praise I've heard for Orioles' groundskeeper Pat Santarone.
Granted, I saw the pitchers cleaning a lot of mud from their spikes
and some water squirt up in the outfield after balls hit the ground,
but I don't believe the conditions had any significant effect on
the outcomes (Dirt in the spikes of Denny, McGregor and Boddicker
didn't seem to affect their performances too much).
I for one believe that baseball belongs on natural turf in the
"old-style" ballparks... Commiskey (sp?), Baltimore's Memorial
Stadium, Yankee Stadium, Fenway Park, etc. The modern stadiums
don't give you the same feel for the game. But the main thing
that stinks is playing on the astroturf with only a paucity (Thank
you, Howard) of dirt on the entire field.
Tell us the truth, Petey. We all know there are two reasons you want
to play at home. First, you're too old for your feeble bat to get a
ball through the infield on regular grass anymore. Second, the ball
just doesn't seem to bounce as well when you spike it after the third
out as only you can do so well, you hot dog.
2) I cast my vote for banishing Cosell and Mouse-burger.
3) As I've predicted all along... O's in 6.
