I was in Detroit a couple days ago and read that the Tigers have been sold (to the man who founded Domino's Pizza for chrissake). IS NOTHING SACRED?? Now that I have that off my chest, can any of you temporary or permanent midwesterners provide any details, like WHYWHYWHYWHYWHYWHYWHYWHY? or HOW MUCH LEGAL TENDER WAS INVOLVED? Nothing was mentioned in the NY/NJ papers. Wonder why? :-) ----------------------------------------------------------------- Tom Dennehy Michigan & Trumbull forever {clyde!tgd}

It was mentioned in the NY Times. It appears that Fetzer is getting old and would rather sell the team to someone who wants it before he dies rather than give it to heirs who may not want it or know what to do with it. (Look at what has happenned to the Mets since Joan Payson died. Monaghan, the new owner, is from Detroit, and apparently a lifelong Tigers fan who as a child wanted to play shortstop for the Tigers, but eventually did "the next best thing." He claims that he "didn't want to just own a baseball team," he "wanted to own the Detroit Tigers." He plans to sit back and observe the operation of the club for two years as vice chairman while Fetzer remains as chairman and the rest of the management (including Sparky Anderson, who Monaghan thinks is "the greatest") stays on. Monaghan has refused to say how much he paid, but speculation says that it was anything from 25 to 35 million dollars. All in all, it sounds like the right kind of owner for the Tigers.
