[net.sport.baseball] World Series Predictions

cwa@ihuxm.UUCP (Carl W. Amport) (10/10/83)

Once again, the best team from each league has made it to
                    THE WORLD SERIES
so it is time for every fan's prediction. Phillies in 6.

Does anyone know who is the favorite? I must say that the
thing that upset me most about Baltimore beating Chicago
so easily was that Jimmy the Greek predicted it!

Congratulations to the Orioles and those of you who picked them. I didn't.
I should have remembered that good pitching dominates the playoffs and the
Series, and not get sentimental (sniff-sniff) over the Wheeze Kids or the
Geezers or what not. I am quite impressed by the Orioles' pitching staff.
I also think it is fair that we give K. Glass credit for picking the Orioles
in 5 (I believe that is what he said), considering how much I and others
have been kidding him about his predictions. But I think he had something
to drink when he made the other predictions since the names were right
but the predictions about them were slightly off. The Phillies lost the
only game that Carlton pitched. Maddox was one of the few bright spots
for the Phillies (winning Game 1 with a homer, the only Phillies' win).
Eddie Murray, until Game 5, looked like he was going to have a horrible
series, and as a result, did not get the MVP award (although one might
say he was the MVP for Game 5). Ken, if you added a few 'nots' or 'won'ts'
or removed the same where appropriate, I would make you my baseball betting
advisor forever. But in all seriousness, you were a lot closer to the
mark than I was.

By the way, did anyone hear Howard Cosell call Rick Dempsey a "little tiger"?
My wife says she did during Game 3. I missed the game unfortunately.
If this is true, where is that guy from the Southern Christian Leadership
Conference? He should be complaining about Howard using demeaning terms
again. Howard should stop calling people animals. Just because his
grandchildren are wild doesn't mean he should talk about others in the
same fashion. Howard, if anyone is an animal, you are, you j-ck-ss.
In all seriousness, I feel that he is, as Bowie Kuhn would say about
Curt Flood, "a detriment to baseball." He even insulted Reggie Jackson.
When, during Game 5, talking about Rick Dempsey's profusion (thanks
Howard) of extra base hits during the Series, he said Dempsey "was
hitting like Reggie Jackson; the way he (Jackson) did a few years ago."
The man has no taste; Jackson was on the broadcast team. We also
heard one of the radio guys in the club house talking to Gary Renicke
(I don't remember how to spell it): "Rick Dempsey was the unanimous
choice for MVP; well, not unanimous since I didn't vote for him. Hey
Gary, he shouldn't have been MVP, right? You guys are the We Team.
He shouldn't MVP, right?" What a clod.

I liked one of Earl Weaver's comments. When talking about Mike Schmidt's
slump (and also about the Phillies as a team), he said that in a short
series being at most seven games, that the big guns may very well be
cold and that this should not be any reflection of their value to the
team. Schmidt didn't lead the NL in HRs (I think) for nothing. Even
Eddie Murray was in a slump until Game 5. This is a paraphrase of his
remarks. Earl is a classy guy. Howard would build up whoever is
winning handily and pick on whoever is down. Howard is not classy.

Enough of this verbosity (thanks, Howard). This series is history from
the eyes of this reporter (bye-bye, Howard).

I totally agree with your description of Howard Cosell. He has
absolutely no class, or tact, or (in my opinion) much knowledge
of baseball. And, he seems to stick his foot (along with the rest
of his leg up to his thigh) in his mouth consistently.

One example that has not been mentioned yet (I think) was in the
last game when (I can't remember who it was, but I think it was
Eddie Murray) checked a swing and the catcher appealed to the third
base umpire. Well, the third base umpire said he swung, and it went
down as a strike. Howard then immediately (before the instant replay)
said something (very arrogantly) to the effect "There's no way he swung.
The ump must be blind" (that was NOT a quote - but I don't remember his
actual words). Well, they showed the instant replay, and it wasn't even
close. The umpire at third made an excellent call. (I'll admit I was
skeptical before the instant replay, but I have seen enough appealed
strikes to know not to always believe my eyes). Howard flopped again.

Anyone else remember seeing this? It really helped to emphasize my
opinion of the man (I use that term loosely).

p.s.	I was also disheartened to see Philadelphia fall. But,
I guess it's about time someone besides National League
East division teams win the World Series. (I think they
have won the World Series something like 4 of the last 6
years). Anyone know exactly what the ratio is of NLE
teams being world champs to the other 3 divisions in the
past few years? I would be interested in knowing (since
	I am a Cardinal fan)

p.p.s.	any interest for a net.anti-cosell group? The only problem
is that we could never handle THAT many letters . . .
A lot of machines would run out of disk space quickly...

The NL East winning the world series "something like 4 out of the last 6 years"
????????????????
Correct me if I'm wrong, but the last few years have been...
1983 Baltimore over Phillidelphia (obviously)
1982 St. Louis over Milwaukee
1981 Los Angelas over New York (in the strike shortened season)
1980 Phillidelphia over Kansas City
1979 Pittsburg over Baltimore
1978 New York over Los Angelas
1977 New York over Los ANgelas
1976 Cincinatti over New York
1975 Cincinatti over somebody
1974 ? St. Louis ?
1973 Oakland over somebody
1972 Oakland over somebody
1971 Oakland over somebody
Granted, the NL East hasn't been quite shut out, but they haven't been
dominant by a long shot!

World Series results:

1974 Oakland over Los Angeles
1971 It wasn't Oakland!!!!
1973 Oakland over New York Mets

1975 Cincinnati over Boston
Perhaps the best World Series in my lifetime(<3 decades).
Who could forget Bernie Carbo's homerun to tie up the 6th
game and Carlton Fisk's 12th inning homerun that won the game?
     Obviously, a lot of people!

What do you mean, "1975 Series was Cincinatti against SOMEBODY."!?!?!

That somebody was non-other than the BoSox, in what was arguably
the most exciting World Series to be played in more'n 20 years!
