[net.sport.baseball] YOU GOTTA BELEIVE

HOORAY FOR THE METS!!! FLASH---- For the first time in recorded
history, the Mets have swupped a series from the Astros in the
Astrodome. Great rejoicing can be heard throughout the land.
(Well at least in parts of Queens and New Jersey.) They did
it with names on the roster that no one ever heard of other than
Foster and Strawberry. They are even starting a new catcher
tonight in Atlanta. Think of that, three guys on the starting
nine under 20 years old. What's the world coming to? Heard
they bought a rocking chair for Staub. With any luck, old
Bowtie Cashin will be leaving this year so they can keep some
of the good players for a change. I will never forgive him for
trading Ryan.

I propose that the All Star game be cancelled this year. Why,
you ask? Well, every time the Mets are in the top 3 of the
division at the All Star break, they fall on their kesters
when they come back. Just so that will not happen, all Mets
fans should petition to have the game cancelled. :-)

I will be taking orders for World Series tickets next week.
I will get a big block and we can put up a big sign,

What are you talking about? Nolan Ryan was traded when Johnny Murphy was
GM. Frank Cashen (not Cashin) only became GM when Nelson Doubleday bought
the Mets. In between the two there was Butcher Bob Scheffing, the man
truly responsible for the terrible shape the Mets have found themselves
in since Seavver was traded to the Cincinnati Reds.

Anybody seen this new kid Dwight Gooden? Is he any good? Also, I understand
that Tim Leary pitched a few innings last week. How did he look?

Let us not damn the innocent. Ryan was traded a decade before
Frank Cashen arrived as general manager.

The Mets deserve credit for producing some interesting and winning
baseball at the beginning of the season (5-1 now, I think). Cheers for
Oquindo, Bachman and the young, unheard-of pitching staff. But Shay is
the worst armpit every produced for a ballgame: utterly filthy and
dangerous! I don't think anyone could watch a full World Series there
without coming down with a fatal social disease.

Sorry about Bowtie, got carried away. I was thinking about his
contract being up in '85. He said, in the NEWS, that he would take a walk
if the Mets did not make it to the top by the end of the contract.

Oh yeah, about Shea. Eddie the K (the mayor) announced a 25 mil
cleanup of the place last night on the news. The biggest item
seems to be 50 enclosed boxes for the hoi poloi. Big deal. He
also said they will put in more restrooms. Finally! Whew!
Hope they don't forget to fix the water fountains. The rest goes
for paint. Gee, last time I sat in the loge, I was two inches
high on the seat because of the paint. Wonder where they will
put a new coat?

I still like shea better than the Bronx House of Detention--oops
I mean Yankee Stadium.

As a veteran of the 1969 World Series (yah, Mets, there's no time as good
as the First Time), I propose that we ban politicians from attending
series. Or at least throw John Lindsay out, instead of the traditional
first pitch.

Hey, I LIKE Shea Stadium. It may be grimy, but I've always loved the cavernous
area under the stands with all those walkways. Going to Shea is always
exciting, probably because it's where I saw my first baseball game. I never
get that same feeling going to Candlestick or the Oakland Coliseum.
Besides, you can actually go to a summer night game and not have to wear
warm clothes, which is more than you can say about the ball parks out here.
Shea, with its subway and LIRR stations, is much more accessible than, say,
Candlestick, which is in the middle of nowhere and accessible only by car.
And I've never found Shea to be dangerous; certainly Yankee Stadium and
Comiskey Park in Chicago are in much more dangerous areas.
Also, the food's better at Shea. The main thing that I find wrong with Shea
is the low-flying planes.

I must admit, though, that the nicest ball park I've ever been to is Fenway
in Boston.

Nobody's ever heard of Keith Hernandez?????
Would you like to trade him for Allen and Ownbey?
