[net.sport.baseball] Braves, Major League Farm Club

tommyo@ihuxw.UUCP (Tom O`Connor) (04/27/84)

Do you mean Phil Niekro, the old-timer that tossed his
knuckler for YEARS for the Braves? If you do, I certainly
don`t classify him as a non-star.

Anyway, you need look no farther than the friendly confines
of Wrigley field to find the training grounds for many a
superstar. Let`s just start with these names - Lou Brock,
Bill North, Burt Hooten, Andre Thornton, budding star
Carmelo Martinez, Larry Gura, Oscar Gamble. There were also
many who started out great in Chicago, and then got traded,
like Bruce Sutter, Bill Madlock (wins 2 batting titles, then
asks for big bucks, gets traded to S.F. for Rick Monday,
who gets paid MORE than what Madlock asked for), Bill Caudill.
I know I could just keep on going. Manny Trillo.
Bad trades have kinda been a tradition on the North side, though
there have been good ones. Fergie Jenkins, Randy Hundley,
Bill Buckner (though he was a star before we got him).
Maybe I`ll go home & check out my trades book and make a list
& see if there are other teams that have made more bad
trades than the Cubbies.

Hey, Cubs aren`t doin` too bad right now! 1/2 game out of first.

Might as well submit the Giants to the list. Was watching the Saturday
game of the week when old Joe Garbageiola (oops, didnt really mean to
spell it that way) started wondering if anyone had come up with an
ex-SF Giants team made up of todays players that the Giants have let
slip away (sob). Gary Matthews, Gary Maddox, George Foster, Gaylord
Perry, plus many many more. I guess everyones home team suffers from
this horrible disease of sending away gifted players.

How about submitting the Golden State Warriors as the Basketball fran-
chise that has made so many of the leagues teams good with ex-players :
Gus Williams, Jamall Wilkes, Robert Parrish, Jeff Ruland, Lewis Lloyd,
Rickey Green, and Lorenzo Romar. Not a bad NBA all-star team!

<Let's Go Mets>

Major League Farm Club, huh? Let's see:
Amos Otis, Nolan Ryan, Tom Seaver, Tug McGraw, Ken Singleton,
Ron Fairly (played in 67-68), Claudell Washington (bet you forgot
him, Randy), John Milner, Jon Matlack, Rusty Staub (who has returned),
	Jeff Reardon, and others!

A while ago, in the "Atlanta Journal" is ran an article giving a
full 25-man, almost 100% all-star lineup that included former Mets. But
realize that most of these did not happen before the death of Mrs. Joan
Payson (the Mets' original owner) or the current regiem of Doublday.

I doesn't bother me, as of the time I write thies, the Mets are
in first place by 2 games.

			Lets Go Mets!!!!
