The question is how many pitchers have won two games in a day. My trusty 1981 Baseball Record Book lists no less than 50 pitchers who won two COMPLETE games in a day. The last time it happenned was 1926. Simply winning two games in a day is not unheard of even today. I recall that last year Jesse Orosco of the Mets won two games in relief in a single day (and three in a week). I'm sure that it's happenned many other times. My record book doesn't have an entry for most games lost in a day. Wayne Citrin (ucbvax!citrin)

Yesterday, the Chicago White Sox won a 25 inning game which had been resumed after a curfew the night before. This allowed Tom Seaver to pitch one inning of the game, pick up the win, and then pitch in the next game which he also won. This leads up to the question: How many major league pitchers have ever won 2 games in one day? and the corollary: How many major league pitchers have ever LOST 2 games in one day? I don't know the answer, but there are at least 2 (counting Seaver). Matthew Merzbacher Brown University ...decvax!brunix!mam

When Denny McLain was with the Senators in their last year here, we had a similar situation, with McLain finishing up the suspended game and then starting the regular one. If I remember correctly, he lost both (he was 10-22 that year. I saw one of his victories that year, against the Angels). -- Call-Me: Pete Cottrell, Univ. of Md. Comp. Sci. Dept.
