Somebody please give me an explanation before I lose it(my sanity that is). A couple of days ago(Tuesday I believe) I was switching through the channels on the tube to see whats showing. I stop at the cubs-reds game. Bottom of the first. Two out. Runner on first. Two strikes. Reds batting. Score 1-0 Cubs. The pitch..... Runner goes..... Ball is in the dirt..... Batter tries to check his swing..... Catcher throws to second as pitch is called a ball.... Runner is safe..... Theres an appeal to third base ump and the batter is called out on strikes..... Cubs run off the field..... Commercial break..... I start flipping through the stations again. I return to the baseball game as the top of the second is ending. The score is now 1-1! How did the Reds score while the opposing team was batting? Help............................

The catch to this situation is the very fact that the pitch the Red batter (Dave Parker) swung at was in the dirt. Because this would have been the third out the Cubs were obligated to either tag Parker or Throw down to first before he got there. With less than two out and first base occupied Parker would of course automaticly been out. But of course their were two out at this time. While WGN was running the commercial Parker started to trot out towards the outfield unto the Red's manager (Vern Rapp) yelled at him to stand on first base. This of course is what he did and since the Cubs failed to make a play on him he was declared safe at first. Therefore instead of the end of the inning the situation changed to runners on first and second and only two outs.
