[net.sport.baseball] Snatching victory from...

dave@utcsrgv.UUCP (Dave Sherman) (05/18/84)

Well, the Blue Jays got lucky the other day (this past Tuesday).
I didn't see the game, but here's how the papers reported it.

Twins leading 1-0, top of the ninth (in Minnesota). One out.
Blue Jays at 1st and 2nd. Just-called-up rookie pinch-hits, and
hits a soft ground ball. Everyone sees the double play coming.
Short to second, one; one to first, double pl-- oops, the first
baseman came off the bag. Umpire changes his "out" signal in mid-wave.

Meanwhile, the Blue Jay from 2nd is heading home. (The game was
"over" anyway, why not try for it?) No problem nailing him, lots
of time. First baseman fires the ball to the plate, but... where's
the catcher? Running up to the mound to congratulate the pitcher
on his victory! Run scores.

Naturally, the Jays scored four more in the tenth and won 5-2.
Wish I'd been there.
