[net.sport.baseball] trades

In addition to the now much confused Cubs-Indians seven man trade, two
other deals were cut just before the June 15 deadline. St. Louis dealt
Oberkfell to Atlanta for Dayley and Jorgensen, while the Mets got
Berenyi from Cincinnati for three minor leaguers.

In the best interests of baseball, the Cardinals ought to be stopped
from giving away their infield. Sure, with the emergence of Green last
year and Van Slyke this year, they had excess talent, and trading away
Hernandez and now Oberkfell can thus be rationalized, but it seems the
Cardinals are determined to give away more than they get. Well, at
least for Hernandez, they got a grade A relief pitcher (something they
really needed, right?), but the guy who worked out the Oberkfell trade
for the Braves must be in a perpetual state of giggling by now. What
an awful deal!!!

Cincinnati gives up Berenyi for two AAA pitchers and an A third
basemen, though the last was a first round pick in the 1983 draft.
Berenyi may have some control porblems, but there is no doubt that he
is (or can be) a starter for any major league team. This trade is
most easily described as speculation by Cincinnati on the minor
leaguers, though there has been some hinting that Berenyi wanted out
from the Reds.

Now come on, NL fans! If the June 15 trades don't spark some exchanges
in this group, then all we'll have to look foward to are rules
discussions and name calling. Let's take baseball, for cripes sakes.

I agree the Braves would seem to have gotten a steal for the moment - a .300,
good-fielding infielder, but what are they going to do next year if and when
Horner gets back? It would be quite a waste platooning the two at third, and
with Hubbard already at second, the Braves can't simply move Oberkfell back to
his old position. Maybe, with Chambliss and Watson both aging, they'll try
Horner at first next year. Or perhaps they're already thinking of trading away
an infielder (for a top quality pitcher?) Then again, it may just mean that
Ted Turner will vote for the DH this December.
