Oberkfell at shortstop? I doubt it. His natural position is 2b, and he was converted to third. I really doubt he has the range/quickness to make a reasonable ss, though I was surprised how well he did at 3rd; he is reasonable in the field. He is a good bat-control-type hitter. He didn't really blossom until he was in the majors a couple of years. I'm sure he is upset about the trade; he's a hometown boy (Troy, Illinois, about 20 mi from St. Louis). How do you Cub fans feel about the Eck/Buckner trade? We like it in Boston; it may be a trade which really does help both teams. Eck has good stuff sometimes, but he hasn't been at all consistent. -- --Bruce Nemnich, Thinking Machines Corporation, Waltham, MA {decvax!cca,ihnp4!mit-eddie,allegra!ias}!godot!bruce, BJN@MIT-MC.ARPA

I doubt that Oberkfell is sorry about the trade. He was going to ride the bench eventually because the Cards wanted Van Slyke at 3rd. Now he can play full-time until next year if Horner comes back. The only bad thing about this trade is that Randy Johnson got screwed. He was doing real well and I feel sorry for him. Russ Pierce Denver, CO

As far as the Eck/Buck trade, I really hated to see Buckner leave Chicago. During the last 7 years he was with the Cubs, he was many times the only spark on the team. That's not putting down other former Cub players, it's just that he was quite a drawing card for the Cubs in those days. I didn't agree with his role this year as a pinch hitter and for his sake I'm glad to see him doing well in Boston. It was a very emotional departure from Chicago. I wish him well, he doesn't need luck, he's got talent. As far as Eckersly (sp?), the Cubs really needed another starter and has done an excellent job here. The problem has been that when he's been in, the Cub bats had holes in them. That will change though and when the bats start connecting again, Eckersly will be a large reason the Cubs make the playoffs.
