    AN ODE TO SLEEPLESS NIGHTS

Here I sit with my eyes all red.
Tried to sleep, but sat up instead.
I watched the game to the bitter end.
My spousal duties I did not tend.

The game in Philly, at night, the Mets.
The odds were even against all bets.
Koosman and Tug remembered the dream
of magic years and a magic team.

Darling challenged Philly from the hill,
and Hernandez hit one that's going still.
Right through the news and Carson too,
I stuck to the set like super glue.

The Mets were ahead the entire game.
This year to last, they ain't the same.
Kept tapping the ball throught Philly defense.
Their running and stealing made very good sense.

Then in the seventh, the Phillies awoke..
The low fast ball they started to stroke.
Out came Darling and in came Leary.
My eyes were starting to get quite bleary.

Then it's the eighth and who should appear,
But Jesse Orosco and eight tiny reindeer (oops).
Jesse threw smoke to the top of the order,
setting off fire alarms to the Jersey border.

Finally the ninth, with the Mets up five,
and Owens is trying to keep it alive.
What happened next is kind of a haze,
as the Mets continued to confound and amaze.

Pop-up, strikeout, a grounder to short,
The Mets once again take charge of the fort.
Mouth Cossell says something quite trite,
And Drysdale winces with all his might.

The game was all over, the chips all gone.
Now for some sleep to get up at the dawn.
I didn't care that so soon comes the sun,
For the Mets were on top now, number one.

So here's to you all Philly and Cub fans,
and all those other also rans.
Remember the night of June twenty five,
When the Mets really showed their very alive.

Now I must go shut the office door,
So I can curl up and sleep down on the floor.
For tonight the two again do play,
And I know darn well it's up I'll stay.

Sorry to see all the Met hoopla here
They may win it all, but not this year.
Sorry to dash the party plans
But you're starting to sound like Cubbie fans*
