Let's hear it for them Phils. The consensus in newsland at the beginning of the year was that the Phils would not finish better than fourth. We will see. They are still neck and neck with the Cubs, or should I say Phubs since they have so many ex-phils. The Phils have been winning without Cy Young Pitcher John Denny and catcher Bo Diax. Schmidt missed a 3 day series with the Pirates but the Phils took 3 of 4, including a sweep of a double header. Owens finally benched DeJesus, saying " Ivan should watch the game from the bench for a few days. Kiko Garcia comes in and goes 4 for 4 in one of the games with the Pirates. Von Hayes has proved himself in Philadelphia, and Rookie Juan Samuel has a chance for Rookie of the Year Honors. (I personally like Dwight Gooden). Are there any other Phillie Phanatics out there in baseball land? Prediction : The August heat at Wrigley will kill the Cubs and the Phils will win their sixth NL East title in nine years. The are constantly flirting with the major league cellar spot but never, ever count them out. Despite the fact they can't hit their way out of a glass bag at the moment, they still have one of the finest pitching staffs in all of ball, a commodity they rarely could boast about. See you in September.

You'll find they show that the East is 6 games over .500, and the West 6 games below. Anyone who thus infers NL West superiority must be thinking of a different year or a different league. Also, it's unfair to imply that the AL is an inferior league. In fact, it's unfair to make any comparison. They just play a different sport... David Rubin {allegra|astrovax|princeton}!fisher!david

The Dodgers are too inexperienced and inconsistent, The Braves are sinking now that most of their pitching has deserted them, the Reds have had their day - try again next year when you have another year under you - and Soto will probably jump to the NHL, anyway :-) Who's that leave? Houston? Maybe if they had Thon they could make a race of it, but ... At least the NL West is not the AL West. My revised prediction for that division: a 7 way tie at .455. Ken Kaufman

I saw it in numbers a while ago. The NL East has won more games vs. the West than they did for the same time last year! Besides, look at the Braves (four games in last last week that the opposing team scored more than 10 runs). The D*dg*er (they should still change their name) can only beat the Braves. Forget Cincy and SF; both are going nowhere. Houston can't do anything and SD, for the team they bought, are not getting their money's worth! NL East will be a fight between the Mets, Phillies, and Cubs until the Cubs fall apart in August (the heat, during the day, in Chicago will do them in). The Mets will win the East! (Biased opinion) As far as the Tigers: When the Cleveland Indians won 113 games in 1950 (still the record), they lost the series (to St. Louis, I think). Remember, the Junior League does not play the same brand of baseball (Flame to the DH rule). #R:tesla:-38500:ism780:20400006:000:939 ism780!michaelf Jun 29 09:34:00 1984 Winning percentages in a division doesn't mean a damn thing. If all the toughest teams were in one division, they'd all be playing .500 ball. The NL East has had more different teams wear championship rings in the past few years than any other. Stats can be very misleading. Would you want Wade Boggs ( .360 )up for you in 9th with the bases loaded or would you rather have Reggie Jackson ( .250 ? ) or Joe Morgan ( .250 ? )? I wish they would have a statistic for "clutchness". The NL East plays the scrappiest baseball in the majors and when the bucks are down, they're usually up. Every year people say the AL East is the toughest because they usually have a few high percentage teams in it. Big deal. How many times in the past 5 years have they won the Big One? Get away from me with this AL East trash. Detroit is great but the NL East are winners!

#R:tesla:-38500:ism780:20400007:000:1392 ism780!abe Jun 29 10:29:00 1984 Gee, I always thought winning games was the main goal. If winning percentages aren't an indication of a team (or division's) strength, then what is? Let's put this NL East myth to rest once and for all. If all the teams in a division were great, they wouldn't be at .500, they'd be beating up on the other division. This is exactly what has happened between the AL East and West for several years now; the East always wins a LARGE number more games than the West. This could, of course, mean that the West is just lousy; but of course, they had the team with the best record in baseball last year! Besides, any division in which the Yankees (despite their problems) can be 20 games out by the All-Star break gets my vote as the best. World Series victories have a much larger luck factor than doing well in a 162-game season; given the fact that you've won your division (and after all, the NL East has to have SOMEONE win the division), all you've got to do is get lucky in a couple of short series to win the World Series (which is precisely what St. Louis in '82 and Pittsburgh in '79 did -- get lucky, that is). The AL East is the best. And the Tigers are the best of the best. They're gonna break the mark for wins in a season this year! '27 Yankees, watch out! As a diehard Tiger fan for 20 years, this year is absolute heaven. Aren't there any other Bengal fans out there?

#R:tesla:-38500:ism780:20400009:000:405 ism780!michaelf Jun 29 17:21:00 1984 I'm sorry, but the purpose of any sport is to win WHEN IT COUNTS. Ask the great players who never won the big one. The World Series may only be seven games, but it's seven games for both teams, not just the "lucky" one. If team X is so much better than team Y, why can't they just buckle down for 4 out of 7 when it counts? Great teams, truly great teams, don't choke. Nuff said.
rainbow@ihuxe.UUCP (07/05/84)
It seems to me though, that if you lose too many games that dont count, you will not have any games left that do count at the end of the season. Either that or there will be so many games that do count you cannot possibly win them all.
