[net.sport.baseball] total wins vs winning percentage

All of the talk about the most WINS by an A.L. team has
obscured one point: in the days when Cleveland won their
111 (113?) games, fewer total games were played.
Hence, even if a contemporary team like Detroit were to win
111 games, their winning PERCENTAGE would be lower than
Cleveland's must have been.

So, all of you stat fans, what was Cleveland's winning percentage
in the '54 season, and how many would a team have to win nowadays
to do better?
