[net.sport.baseball] A.L. All-Star team starters and fan balloting

scooby@ihopa.UUCP (Scott Mitzel) (07/06/84)

1B - Rod Carew
2B - Lou Whitaker
SS - Cal Ripken, Jr.
3B - George Brett
OF - Dave Winfield
OF - Chet Lemon
OF - Reggie Jackson
 C - Lance Parrish

As can be easily seen by this, the knowledge of the fans is limited.
For the most part, it is not too bad of a team, but there are a couple of
serious omissions. I have the greatest respect for Rod Carew, and he
definitely deserves to play, but not ahead of Eddie Murray. In the outfield
I have no arguments over Dave Winfield, since he leads the league in hitting,
and Lemon isn't a bad choice, but what the *!$& is Reggie doing there.
Leaving out players like Jim Rice, Dave Kingman, and Tony Armas in favor
of Jackson is a sin. I like to see the fans involved, but unless the truly
deserving players get the respect that they deserve, I feel that the fan
balloting should be eliminated.

Tank McNamara said it best this week...who should choose the
All-Star team?
...the players: petty grievances get in the way
...the press: pick the ones who give the interviews
...the coaches: pick their own team members
...the fans: pick some oldies (like Jackson).
Personally, I would rather watch the players I like to see whether
they be old timers or not. At least the fans had some say in the
matter.

Well it seems as though the NL has the better fans as well as the
better team.

The "questionable" picks for the AL failed

  Jackson (0-2) + 1 error
Carew (0-2) why the hell wasn't he called on to bunt ?

The "questionable" pick for NL (I thought he had a shot at MVP)

Garvey with the first hit,a pick off at first and starting the double play
that prevented the AL getting back into the game fully justified his
   selection.

LETS GO NATS FOR ANOTHER 10 YEAR STRETCH !!!!!!!!!

I was in a race against a shutdown when replying, and I don't think it
got out, so here it is again.

Reading this whole All-Star discussion has made it apparent to me
that we are dealing with a simple question of semantics, namely
"What is an All-Star?" . One school of thought is that we are
talking about the media stars, some of whom are living off of past
glories. Others, myself included, think the game should show us the
players having the best season thru the halfway mark. That way we may see
the rising young stars, the player having his one dream year, and the
steady perennial performer who is performing again this year. I
personally think it is a crime that Reggie Jackson started, much less
was even on the team; it is a shame to have left Dave Kingman off the team
so Jackson could be there. Further, I doubt Carew should even have been there. I
think that after 7.5 years of of All-Star, MVP quality, Eddie Murray has
more than earned the right to start the All-Star game. I think he is the
most consistent and valuable player in baseball now.

I think the thing to realize concerning the All Star game
is that it's not so much a competition as a showcase. The
players chosen don't represent so much the best in baseball
as the do the folks we (the fans) would most like to see play.
Personally, I'd have no objection to seeing Pete Rose start in
the outfield so I vote for him over a player that, on the
basis of his performance this season might deserve the status
of "All Star". It's a media event folks so why not just give in
and let the (network) stars play!
