A bunch of us were standing around talking baseball the other day when someone brought up a recent observation (I think it was by Earl Weaver) that the best shortstop ever to play the game was playing right now, but the observer just didn't know who it was. The current era does seem to be a bonanza for shortstops (consider just a few in alphabetical order: Bowa, Ripken, Smith, Templeton, Trammell, Yount; add your own). It then occurred to just about everybody that there seemed to be "boom times" for all the positions: times where a bunch of greats all seemed to be playing at the same time at the same position for different clubs. We pretty quickly got the list back to the mid-50's, but got stuck there (all the members of the group were late 20s to early 40s in age): late 70's - present shortstops early 70's - mid 70's catchers 60's pitchers late 50's - early 60's outfielders Any commentary? Any extension of the list? ____ Bill Laubenheimer ___ / \ ___ UC-Berkeley Computer Science / \ | o o | / \ ucbvax!wildbill ------+++----------()----------+++------ ...Killjoy was here!
