[net.sport.baseball] Found the Broom

rainbow@ihuxe.UUCP (08/09/84)

The broom was found as the mets lose a four game sweep to the cubs.
Last rites will now be performed. May the mets rest in peace.
You skeptics out there, do you believe now? Remember you heard it
here first. Bye bye cubs as they leave the rest of the league behind
as spectators.

Basking in heavenly bliss,
However long it may last......

I'd say it's rather early for the broom.

The Mets are 4.5 games out. In 1969, the Cubs led by 9.5 games on
August 15 or thereabouts, and the Mets won by more than 8 games.

George Will's latest column in Newsweeks is a full page tribute to the
Cubs, in which he says that "the Cubs are William Jennings Bryan, a
prarie uprising against the highfalutin spat-wearing Easterners, the
Mets and the Phillies". The simile may be stronger than most Cub fans
would like; after all, Bryan was pretty famous for some September
fades. And didn't he lose three times (1969, 1973, and ...)?
