I have just lost all respect for the mets. They are the most unsportsmanlike team I have ever seen. First they hit Owen on the knee-cap knocking him out of the game. Okay. I can understand one got away. I can even understand Moreland being hit in the rump with the hot bat he's had against the mets. There was no intent to injure. But today was just a little too much. A fastball directly hitting Dernier's head! I hope he's going to be okay. And not just because I'm a cub fan. Such tactics are totally uncalled for. I hope there is justice in this world and the mets blow their 5-3 lead today not to mention fall out of the pennant race. They don't deserve to be in it. Just because they feel there is no other way to stop the cubs attack. Disgusting. You mets fans, you should be ashamed of your team. Robert

Yes, things are getting a bit vicious, aren`t they? I was very, very surprised that nobody got ejected when Moreland charged the mound in the 2nd game of the double-header. I was under the impression that both teams were under the warning for today`s game, so there should have been an ejection when Bobby D got beaned. I guess Lee Smith hit a Met later in the game, and both he and Frey got the heave-ho. The brushback pitch is one thing, but throwing at a hitter is really going too far. But the final line is the Cubs SWEPT the Mets and now have a 4 1/2 game lead. It`s now on to Montreal for a 4 game series with the Expos. I`ll be up there with them, along with a lot of other Cub fans. Hope to come back to the Windy City with a few more Cub victories. Tom O`Connor

The evidence is that Terrell was not trying to bean Dernier. Terrell, Johnson, and even Frey are all certain that it was accidental, as even Mario Soto is not going to bring the tying run up by hitting a guy. The umps later admitted that they thought it was unintentional, but they wanted to play it safe, given what happened the day before. So they gave both Terrell and Johnson the heave-ho. The same situation came up in the 9th with the Cubs leading 7-5 and Foster hitting. Smith let loose with a fastball right at Foster's head (and believe me, a Smith fastball is a much more serious matter than one of Terrell's), barely missing beaning him. Again, everyone thought it was unintentional (as it would have been really poor strategy to bring the tying run up), but the umps, again playing it safe, ejected Frey and Smith. In fact, the only guy hit by the pitch this series who has a legitimate gripe is Moreland. Lynch was certainly trying to brush him back, but it was not a knock down pitch. I think everyone's getting a little overheated; there was no HEADhunting. David Rubin {allegra|astrovax|princeton}!fisher!david

Good Grief, rainbow!robert, get back to the minors. I suppose it's ok for the cub pitchers to go head-hunting? If you had stayed around for the rest of the game, you would have seen Smith and Frey get bumped too. And how about the jerks sitting behind the Mets dugout? The bleacher bums at least have some class at wiggley field. They throw paper, not bottles. This is Big League Baseball, not the East McKeesport Industrial League. Sure the ball gets away. If you would watch more games, you would see it happen quite often. Usually it is called a wild pitch or passed ball when it doesn't go in the direction of the batter. Besides, why would Terrel want to put the go ahead run on first with one out? That would be just plain stupid. T. C Wheeler
