Can the Cubs fans tell me why they are so much against night games? The newspaper said it had something to do with the neighborhood, but what is it about?

<> Part of it is due to tradition, but a substantial part is due to the fact that the "Friendly Confines" are located in a residential area. The people of the neighborhood do not want all the problems associated with night baseball: Noise pollution LATE at night, Individuals who have imbibed a bit too much urinating on the lawns (something that increases in frequency as darkness descends), and other such problems.

I always thought it was because Wrigley field doesn't have sufficient lighting to play after dark. Of course, this brings up the obvious question, "why don't they install sufficient lighting?" I'd be surprised if the design of the stadium made the installation of night lights either impossible or very expensive, but I don't know, (I've never been there.) maybe it does. -- Jeff Richardson, DCIEM, Toronto (416) 635-2073 {linus,ihnp4,uw-beaver,floyd}!utcsrgv!dciem!jeff {allegra,ihnp4,linus,decvax}!utzoo!dciem!jeff

The main reason why the Cubs should not have to play any night games at Wrigley Field is because they would lose home field advantage. Wrigley Field at night with lights would become the "unfriendly confines". The Cubs have a great home record this year and it would only be fair to be able to use this advantage, just like any other team. Next year is the time to decide about lights, but to make the Cubs play post-season games in the dark this year is unfair, since they didn't have the regular season to practice playing in the lights at home.

I maybe wrong but I think the Cubs are against night games because they have no lights. epsilon!mbc2!gbr

... The state legislature passed a law last year prohibiting night games at Wrigley Field. It's against the law. Although, money counts more than the law. Numbers leaked/released to the press amount to something like each team losing $700k. This is only based on hearsay. Harry Caray brought it up in his editorial on the subject after Saturday's game. Later, Chuck Swirsky(sp?) and Dallas Green were answering phone calls on WGN and the suggestion arose that if you feel strongly about the Cubs losing home advantage and playing at night to write Bowie Kuhn. Here's the address they broadcasted Bowie Kuhn Commissioner of Major League Baseball 350 Park Ave. New York, N. Y. 10022 (212)371-7800 Dallas Green says if the commissioner says install lights, they will have to install lights. He 'says' he thinks if the Cubs win it playing day ball, they should complete the season playing day ball at home. I think the day has come that lights will be installed permanently in Wrigley Field. Not this year, probably next. I just hope weekend games stay during the day. Nothing like the bleachers on a summer afternoon. Suzanne M. Engels AT&T Bell Labs Naperville

-- >> I maybe wrong but I think the Cubs are against night games because >> they have no lights. epsilon!mbc2!gbr Not really. The Cubs outfield knows the twists and turns of every inch of those vines blindfolded. I think they'd be delighted to take on the best of the West illuminated by just a faint glow from the streetlights on Addison. -- *** *** JE MAINTIENDRAI ***** ***** ****** ****** 28 Aug 84 [11 Fructidor An CXCII] ken perlow ***** ***** (312)979-7261 ** ** ** ** ..ihnp4!ihuxq!ken *** ***

Ken Perlow writes to suggest that the Cub outfielders are so familiar with the outfield at Wrigley Field that they would get the job done with only the streetlights used for lighting the field. Good humor! I feel that putting up lights in Wrigley Field would be disastrous for the Cubs. "Sarge" is still getting used to playing left field during the day, and Keith Moreland, great hitter that he is, makes every fly ball to right field an adventure! I'm sure they would have trouble playing in the lights at Wrigley.
