[net.sport.baseball] Phillies in 84

The Phillies will take it all this year!

           Hitting: Pitching: Relievers:
           ------- -------- ---------

Von Hayes John Denny Al Holland
Juan Samuel Steve Carlton Larry Anderson
           Sixto Lezcano Shane Rawley
           Mike Schmidt Jerry Koosman
           Ozzie Virgil Charlie Hudson
           Al Oliver
           Len Matucsek
           Greg Gross
           Garry Maddox

I just listed those players who I thought would have a significant
impact on the Phillies chances this year. I know, not much in the way
of relievers. Well, I believe that the hitting and the pitching combined
will make up for that (plus Holland is still outstanding). The Cubs have
the hitting also (for now) but their pitching will probably not hold up.
The Mets, forget it. Beyond Gooden, Strawberry, and Orosco, forget it.
But, once the Pirates get some hitting, watch out (maybe next year)!

I thought it was interesting that you did not include Glenn Wilson
or John Wockenfuss in your list of Phillies hitters. These are
the two players the Phils received from the Tigers for Willie
Hernandez. I think that this was the deal that put Detroit where
they are. Hernandez is in my opinion a shoe-in for the American
Leagues Fireman of the Year and in the top five for the Cy Young.

As far as the Phillies taking it all, I don't see how the Tigers
can get beat. They have 3 starting pitchers that have won at least
15 games (Morris,Petry,Wilcox) an excellent righty-lefty combo
in the 'pen (Hernandez (7-2, 28 saves), Lopez (10-0, ?(10) saves)),
defense up the middle (Parrish(28hrs), Trammel(.315), Whitaker(.300)
and Lemon (.280)) and the best record in baseball.

I rest my case.

If the Pirates get one ( maybe two ) hitters who can hit at
least 20 homers and 80 rbis they'll match the Tigers' pace this
year. The Bucs pitching staff has the lowest ERA in the league,
is up there in most Ks ad has just been great all year. Can anyone
out there tell me how many one run games the bucs have lost this year?
I'm sure they're well over 30. One home run in most of those games...
They'll probably trade the Candy Man ( who's been begging to be traded )
or Tudor ( who they gave up what they need most for--Easler) An
point, Candelaria has been bad-mouthing the bucs GM, Peterson. Peterson
said something unusual, he said that candy can bitch and criticize him
him all he wants, he's not getting traded. Peterson said he doesn't care
what candy says because he's pitching so well he's not going anywhere.
Hmmm, this doesn't sound like Steinbrenner.

News from Paradise:

Back from Hawaii last week after seeing the Pirates' Triple A farm
club, the Hawaii Islanders, stomping all over the Edmonton Trappers.
Hawaii won 13 games in a row this season and has copped the 2nd
half title with 12 games still remaining in the season.

Good hitting club; don't remember any names though. Too busy
making that vacation count.
