[Who's on third? I don't know...] The Mets have acquired Ray Knight from Houston for three minor league players to be named later. They have been looking for a right-handed bat and an infielder who could play more than one position, so the trade is no shocker. Here's what is... Since Santana and Gardenhire are disabled, and Oquendo hits with less authority than the Met starters, the Mets have been using Backman at short whenever possible and playing Chapman at second. However, Backman is an ineffective hitter against left-handed pitching (even though he is a switch-hitter). The Mets are planning to move Hubie Brooks to short, and start Knight at third. Comments? I think it is a good idea against lefties, as the Mets cannot afford the luxury of allowing Oquendo to bat regularly. I think that against righties, though, they're better off sticking with Backman at short and moving Brooks back to third. Chapman would then play second every day.
