[net.sport.baseball] Playoff/Series Predictions

wildbill@ucbvax.ARPA (William J. Laubenheimer) (09/29/84)

Here I go, shooting off my big mouth again. Now that the last
playoff spot has been settled, it's time to put myself out on
a limb again and voice my fearless predictions for the playoffs
and the World Series.

AL Playoffs: K.C. will probably get lucky and win one. The Tigers
will win the rest of them. Detroit in 4.
NL Playoffs: Depends on the weather. If the wind at Wrigley is
blowing out, the Cubs' powerful bats will take them
off to San Diego with a 2-0 lead, and they'll win it
in 4. If the wind is neutral or blowing in (and it blows
in COLD in October), Gossage will be a factor and it'll
be the Padres in 5 (or 4 if it blows in both days).
The Series: I'm rooting for Cubs-Tigers. This would be a real Series
played on real grass in real parks which were built for
baseball. Should be a classic, right? Wrong, unfortunately,
for two reasons. First, DH rule this year. Second, matchups.
Sure, the Cubs have hitting. So do the Tigers. Sure, the
Cubs have starters. So do the Tigers. But do the Cubs have
anything to match Lopez and Hernandez? 'Fraid not. Baby
Bear lovers will still be waiting for next year while
wondering why they ever traded Sutter. Tigers in 6, but
only because anything can happen in Wrigley, and usually does.
Otherwise I might even be so rash as to venture a sweep.
Contingency predictions: Anybody over K.C. in 5. Tigers over Padres in 5.
Bonus prediction: Leon Durham will knock at least one ball completely
out of some park. At least one bench-clearing brawl,
probably with NL team (not realizing you can't deck
opposing pitcher with DH rule in effect) in field.
Bowie Kuhn appears without overcoat for night game in
Tiger Stadium. Not to be outdone, Peter Ueberroth strips
to waist for last three innings of next night game.
A stripper will disrupt AL playoff game by running onto
field to kiss George Brett. At least one of three losing
managers will be fired in '85.

Just remember, you heard it here first!!!

You might be a Cub fan in the heart but not in the head.
Anyone who's watched the Cubs faithfully at Wrigley
or WGN would have heard of some relievers such as
Brusstar, Stoddard, Frazier and Smith (although Smith
is not the Smith of 1982 he's definately up to the challenge
according to the last weeks worth of interviews).
Anyone counting out these relievers will have quite
a surprise both in the playoffs and the series.

With respect to the wind blowing in at Wrigley, again
a true Cub fan would remember the number of homers
Sandberg, Durham, Moreland, Cey, Davis, and Matthews
have popped out to Waveland or Sheffield against strong
winds (One game I attended had the wind blowing in from
right field at 22 mph and Durham put it on Sheffield.
It's going to be a great week for Chicago!!!

Go Cubs Go!!!
