Somehow, my wife and I managed to be two of the 58,000+ screaming Padre and Cub fans at Game 4 of the N.L. playoffs. More than 48 hours later, I still haven't fully recovered my voice. It was one sporting event that was *more* than a game. The baseball was *so* good and the level of intensity *so* high, it seemed transcendent. The most amazing thing to me was Garvey's ability to perform under pressure. Game 5 was incredible in a different way. Down 3-0 with only 12 outs left against the best pitcher in baseball is about as "against the wall" as one can get. Yet the crowd, perhaps sensing it was "do or die" time, rose to their feet when Wiggins led off the bottom of the sixth, and the rest is history. As a Tiger fan, I have to agree with Sparky that the Tigers match up better with the Cubs than the Padres. Left-handed pitching has given the Bengals relative trouble this year. The Cubs, like the Tigers, have one southpaw pitcher; San Diego has four, three who can start. Given Show's post-season performance so far, if I were Dick Williams, I'd seriously consider starting Dravecky in Game 4, rather than Show. I'm still rather confident the Tigers will prevail. In fact, I would be surprised if it went seven games. Unknown is the effect of the emotional high that the Padres and the city of San Diego have experienced the last five days. The Tigers have a pattern of playing well on the road and of gaining early leads. This might take the crowd out of the game. On the other hand, the performance of San Diego's middle relievers was *awesome*. Lefferts, Dravecky and Hawkins might be the difference against the Bengal's rotation of Morris, Petry and Wilcox if the latter group cannot go 6-7 innings. The Tigers actually have 3 left-handers, (all relievers) Hernandez, Monge, and Scherrer, although I will give you Monge. FLAME ON... I know I am biased, but I don't think the broadcasters have been fair about the Tiger pitching. I was really irritated when Howard was hyping game 3 of the LCS (Howard loves Detroit :-)) and he said that nobody knew Liebrandt and almost everyone knew Wilcox, wouldn't it be great exposure for Liebrandt? I happen to think that there aren't very many people who knows Wilcox, besides Tiger followers. In game 1 of the series Garagiola really made me mad during the following exchange. Scully : "Well, Morris has really come on in these last few innings." Garagiola : "Yah, and we know if he gets in trouble, they have 'the franchise' down in the bullpen." (shot of Scherrer and Lopez warming up) G : "Of course I don't mean those two. I mean Hernandez." (shot of bullpen bench. Hernandez is in the middle) G : "There he is, 'Mr. Franchise', front and center." ARGH!!!! BTW, did anyone else besides me think the pre-game show was stupid? Did you expect to see some actors pretending they were in from 1903? Another thing. (Boy I have a lot of steam). Why do they keep saying that the Tigers are really experienced in the WS? They keep citing the fact that the Tigers have been to the series many times, and the Padres never? These aren't the same players as in 1968. FLAME OFF. I guess I like to root for the underdog and don't like the fact that that Tigers aren't the underdog. After seeing them blow it year after year, I am glad to see them in the WS. No predictions from me. I just hope they win and hope that if they win in Detroit, the fans don't destroy the stadium. Excuse me. I had read (with great relief) that Monge had been left off the World Series roster. After hearing chants of "No Mas Monge!!" here in San Diego, I was rather dismayed to find the Tigers had picked him up. Hopefully he will never be in a position to do much damage. I also did not realize Scherrer was a lefty. He looked very good in Game 2. A suggestion: mute the volume on your TV (Joe has always been insufferable and Vin is becoming more so) and listen to Jack Buck and Brent Musburger on the radio. Brent is tolerable in small doses and Jack Buck makes it worthwhile. Doug Dickerson douglas@nosc sdcsvax!noscvax!douglas

I personally didn't have any reactions to the NBC as concerns the Tigers. But I do think that their broadcasting is very pro-Tigers. I find this unfair. I know the Padres are underdogs and relatively unknowns but it seems to me that the job of the National TV broadcasters would be to commentate impartially. -- **** I'm writing you to tell you I have nothing to say ****

In reference to turning down the tv and listening to radio and that fact that Brent Musberger is tolerable; here in San Diego, we have something better - Dave Campbell and Jerry Coleman, some of the best I've ever heard.

The comment about "No respect" brings to mind an observation I have made over the years. It seems to me that many fans get accustomed to hearing commentary from "homers", announcers paid by the home team who often pass over the line to "tout". This point of view gets confused with reality so that any commentary by a network announcer appears "biased" against their team. A coworker complains without fail whenever the Chargers or Padres are on national TV that the announcing is slanted against San Diego. At times I have really thought that the opposite was true. A suggestion to turn down the sound and listen to the local "tout" on the radio of course doesn't solve the problem of the perceived "lack- of-respect" by the national media for the local team.
