Below are the promised results of all three polls. I couldn't resist
adding a few comments of my own.
MOST VALUABLE PLAYER VOTE TOTALS
Player Club 1st 2nd 3rd Total
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Ryne Sandberg Chi 7 - 1 22
Dale Murphy Atl 1 - 1 4
Tony Gwynn SD - 1 1 3
Keith Hernandez NY - 1 - 2
Gary Carter Mtl - 1 - 2
Rick Sutcliffe Chi - 1 - 2
Mike Schmidt Phi - - 1 1
Not Cast - - 4 4 -
I infer two things from the above totals:
(1) Most Met fans unsubscribed to the news group as the Cubs
became sure of winning the division title. Frankly, I'm
disappointed that so many of my colleagues were fair
weather contributors.
(2) Someone voted for Dale Murphy. I presume this was largely
based on force of habit.
CY YOUNG VOTE TOTALS
Player Club 1st 2nd 3rd Total
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Rick Sutcliffe Chi 7 - - 21
Dwight Gooden NY 1 2 3 10
Joaquin Andujar StL - 2 1 5
Bruce Sutter StL - 1 1 3
Not Cast - - 3 3 -
Rick Sutcliffe had an extraordinary year. Dwight Gooden broke every
Rookie strike out record, and then some. Bruce Sutter broke the
record for saves. Joaquin Andujar had twenty wins. Compared to the
other three's accomplishments, twenty wins is a pretty pedestrian
criterion.
ROOKIE OF THE YEAR VOTE TOTALS
Player Club 1st 2nd 3rd Total
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Dwight Gooden NY 7 1 - 23
Juan Samuel Phi 1 2 1 8
Glenn Wilson (?) Phi - 1 - 1
Oral Hershiser LA - - 2 2
Not Cast - - 4 5 -
I'm not sure, but I think that Wilson played enough for Detroit that
this was NOT his rookie year. Had Philadelphia played Samuel in the
outfield rather than second base, I suspect this would have been quite
a horse race.
