(Have you guys ever thought of getting a starting pitcher?)

While one can certainly appreciate your enthusiasm for the
Detroit Tigers, I think it only gentlemanly of you to
curtail the use of abusive language on this net.

"If people thought our starting pitching was under-rated before, what will
they think now?"

Speaking of gentlemanly, at least the Tiger fans didn't inundate this
newsgroup with signs after the World Series like the Padre fans did
after the NLCS.

CUBS IN '85 !!! Keeping the faith...

Yes, the Padres took a beating...however; let us applaud them for even being
there. They beat a very tough Cubs team (after being down 2-0, etc.) to get
into the Series and faced a real powerhouse in the Tigers. They could have
done worse. Let us not forget that they won their division quite decisively
(sp?) and there is no reason that they can't repeat the feat. The absence of
their center fielder was a key loss for them and it made a real difference.

The Padres have seen where their weekness are and they know where they must
take action and fill gaps. If such bolstering takes place, why not the Padres
in '85? The teams that many of us netters root for did nothing (in the final
analysis) but watch television in October, while only two teams played baseball
and the Padres were one of those teams. Let's give some credit where it is due
rather than vommit all over the net.

The 1984 World Series does not mark the end of major league baseball.
The Padres have risen from the status of patsies to become a force to be
reckoned with. I am a Yankee fan and would have normally rooted for the
American League, especially the East. I like the Tigers, they obviously did
an excellent job all year and fully deserve to be the World Champs. However,
I was plugging for the Padres all the way. Congratulations to them! They
went farther than 24 other teams (or whatever the number is) and fell short
of the top by only one. It should be no embarrasment to lose to a team of the
caliber of the '84 Tigers.

If you don't like the pitching, grab the ball and take mound.

P.S. - The Tigers would have beat the Cubs.

Dan points out the Padres won their division decisively. Small
wonder, too, considering the second-place Braves winning percentage.
In fact, if one were to standardize the NL schedules (i.e. count each
inter-division game as 1.5 games so that each team "plays" each other
team 18 times), I wouldn't be surprised to see the Padres come out
fourth or worse in the laegue overall. Their decisive win in the West
may be as much a result of that division's weakness as of the Padres'
strengths.
