I still find it hard to believe that Montreal traded Gary Carter for Hubie Brooks, Mike Fitzgeralsd, Herm Winningham, and Floyd Youmans. Carter is, arguably, the finest defensive catcher in baseball, and he certainly is the best all-around offensively (Parrish doesn't hit for average, Pena doesmn't hit for power, etc.).{_. You don't just trade the best catcher in baseball unless you receive something exceptional in return. Hubie Brooks exceptional? Not when you consider that he is a third baseman p(only an average fielder) playing shortstop (below-average fielder), an average hitter (I don't think he can be expected to hit 16 or more homers every year or drive in 70 or more runs), and slow afoot. Herm Winningham reminds me of a Mookie Wilson or a Marvell Wynne type (how do the Mets seem to get hold of these guys?). Wilson is still young so Winningham really had no definite future with the club (unless the Mets had planned on using Wilson in a nother deal). ~rYoumansYoumans looks like a good}i prospectd Prosprospect but may be at least three years away from making the National League. As we all know, the Mets are loaded with pitching prospects. Montreal could use someone RIGHT NOW! Fitzgerald will always be a good defensive catcher who'll hit 2.250 or so with litttle power. The knock on Carter has always been his attitude but erverytime I've seen the Expos play the Mets he looks like he's putting out 120%. HAIL FRANK CASHEN for making the deal of the '80s.
