I'd rather have a fielder who handles 200 chances with 3 errors than one who has little range and only handles 100 chances with 1 error (given the same playing time, of course). Besides range, there are other considerations such as stopping errors by teammates (as in a first baseman who can scoop out low throws; Eddie Murray comes to mind), and the ability to start a double play (again, Eddie Murray has a strong arm and starts a higher than average number 3-6-3 or 3-6-1 double plays). Fielding percentage is a perverse measurement of defensive performance: it rewards players with relatively good hands and minimum range. Gold Gloves tend to be awarded with an EMPHASIS upon range; therefore, it is not surprising (and is desirable) that there be a substantial difference between the group of fielding "leaders" and the gold glovees. If Tom could post the list of "fielding leaders", I'm confident that the net consensus would be that the gold glovers are a substantially superior group of defenders.
