Yesterday the New York Mets tied a major league record for most
consecutive opening day victories with 9. Who also holds that record?

Can you name the 8 ways a batter can get to first base
(e.g. hit, error ... )

barry@ihuxt.UUCP (06/15/83)

Everybody knows that a pitcher can balk. But explain how a
catcher can also commit a balk.

barry@ihuxt.UUCP (06/16/83)

the question was : Name 8 different ways a batter can reach first
base.
The answer is:

1. Hit
2. Error
3. Hit by pitch
4. Fielder's choice
5. Dropped third strike with less than 2 out and nobody on
   first or with 2 outs.
6. Walk
7. Catcher's Interference
8. Fielder's Interference

bob@security.UUCP (Bob Jordan) (06/16/83)

The 8 that I can think of are:

1. hit
2. base on balls
3. error
4. fielder's choice
5. catcher's interference
6. hit by pitch
7. fielder's interference
8. becoming a pinch runner

Although I'm not sure if the last one counts.

Two trivia questions:

1. Which baseball player has every vowel in his first name? (and all but
the letter `a' in his last).

2. Which baseball player has four parts of the body in his name and two
parts of the body in his initials.

tommyo@ihuxw.UUCP (07/29/83)

1. The last man to hit .400 in a season was Ted Williams.
Incredibly, he was NOT the A.L. MVP that year. Who was?

2. When Roger Maris hit 61 homers in 1961, how close did he
come to breaking Ruth`s 60 homer record. That is, after
154 games, how many homers did Maris have?

3. Who won the 1904 World Series?

4. What is the least number of hits there have ever been in
a 9 inning baseball game (no extra innings)?

Bonus:
Who did Ernie Banks hit his 500th home run off of?
(Gotta have one in here for the die-hard Cub fans)

Mail answers only. I`ll post the answers & winners in a couple days.

Yes, they won 500 games after their respective trades. Sorry, I have
no exact figures without my Baseball Encyclopedia. You may be right
about Wise but A)he never turned in any particularly good years with
the Cards or Red Sox (best years with Phils, I think) and B)I like the
name Spicio Spinks. (It figures the Cards later got Jauquin Andujar (:-).)

Anyway, you got two of the three and after yours the responses ceased to
roll in (Spring is almost here...stop hibernating) so the answer is:
Carlton, Ruess (I thought he'd be the hard one), and Mike Torrez.

This leads to a follow-up trivia question: Name the three players who
were also involved in the Mike Torrez deal when he left the Expos.
(Hint: it doesn't involve the Cardinals). Let's hear it this time!!

I think the players in question were:

From Montreal: Mike Torrez, Ken Singleton
From Baltimore: Dave McNally, Rich Coggins

If this is right, the Orioles should feel pretty guilty (:-).

D.S. Could you please post the players the Cards received for Carlton,
Torrez and Ruess? I'd like to see if they are better than Scipio
Spinks (it doesn't take much). Cute name though.

Pitcher Bill Kirkpatrick also went from Baltimore to Montreal in that deal.

Carlton was traded to Philadelphia for Rick Wise.

Torrez was traded to Montreal for pitcher Bob Reynolds.

Reuss was traded to Houston for pitchers Scipio Spinks and Lance Clemons.

I think Dave Winfield is one of the players. The other one I don't
know. I remember Bob Horner being sent to Richmond, but did he ever play
for them?
For extra credit, I'm pretty sure that Al Kaline never played in
the minors. I don't know if he was Dwight Gooden's hero though.

  - Here's an easy one:

Who is the only player to lead the league in homers
his first 7 years in the league?

  - And a tougher one:

Name at least seven players who have played for both the
Milwaukee Brewers and the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Right before the World Series last fall, our newspaper (and
probably many others across the country printed a summary of
World Series records. Among them were two lists - one of the
top 10 World Series Hitters (I think by batting average) and the
top 10 World Series Pitchers (by ERA). The interesting thing
about the lists was the name "Babe Ruth". Oddly enough, he was
not one of the top 10 hitters, but one of the top 10 pitchers.
I believe his ERA was around .50. I wonder at what point he
switched from pitching to outfield. Anybody know when and which
team he was playing for at the time. (I don't know so don't ask
me for the answer. But I am sure that someone surely must know).

Just to be semi-complete in my trivia question about the Cardinals
trading away 500 wins, and to furnish for the question about the Mike
Torrez trade from the Expos...

In return for Torrez and Ruess, the Cards got Bob Johnson, a journeyman
pitcher and Spicio Spinks. There were others involved also, but these
were the particulars. Johnson once had the dubious distinction of being
the all time Kansas City Royal single season strikeout leader! Of course,
this was only after their first season in the league, but he had a very
good year for an expansion team (something like 208 K's). Those Royals
were a smart team too, because they immediately turned around and traded
him for...well I'll leave that for you and the net.

Anyway, when Torrez left the Expos, he went to Baltimore. The trade was one
of the more lopsided probably in baseball history, as it gave the Orioles
production for the next decade (which just ended 1975-1984) and it gave the
Expos very little except it put them in the action for probably the most
influential legal decision in baseball's history. The trade was Torrez and
Kenny Singleton for Rich Coggins and Dave McNally.

The true experts won't consult any references in answering these
questions. I guess group consultation is okay (and fun) but should
be noted. Let's give credit where credit is due. Maybe I'm getting
carried away (or should be) but I love and haven't had a
chance to ply this trade in years. Also I think it appropriate to
always ask a follow-up question.

1. Fred Lynn - Rice had a good year too for the cursed Red Sox.

2. Fernando Valenzuela - Vida Blue wasn't far behind. I used to
wonder why I hadn't heard of him until he starting setting the AL on
its ear in '71 and thus assuming he was a rookie why he didn't win
both awards. It wasn't 'til a few years later (when I got my first
BB Encyclopedia) that I saw his limited '70 season.

3. I do believe it was Burleigh Grimes of the Brooklyn Dodgers in
1920.

4. Nothing comes to mind. I'll take a stab in the dark and try Mel
Stottlemyre because I have a feeling it was a Yankee or a Tiger.

====================================================================

Q1. Who was the first DH in baseball history?

Q2. Who hit the last home run in the old Yankee Stadium?

Q3. The batting title was the closest ever in the AL in 1970. What
players finished 1-2?

Q4. Who was Hank Aaron traded for?

Q5. In the '70's, who had the longest afro in the majors?
