[net.sport.baseball] Cable revenue, Shea renovation, Sporting News Predictions

david@fisher.UUCP (David Rubin) (03/14/85)

Just passing on a few items that I've accumalated.

It was announced by the Commisioner's Office that the Mets and Gaylord
Broadcasting Co. (which recently purchased an interest in the Rangers)
have agreed to share cable revenues with other teams at the same level
as that agreed to earlier by the Yankees and Braves. Now only the
Cubs have not yet agreed to pay other teams for broadcasting into
their regions.

New York City and the Mets have recently reached agreement on the Shea
renovation project. It will cost $36,000,000 (cost overruns to be
born by the construction company which, incidentally, is owned by one
of the club's owners) and includes provisions for luxury boxes, new
restrooms, closing the stands off from the wind, etc. Missing from
the final agreement was an earlier proposal to install artificial
turf...

I came across a copy of the Sporting News' predictions for the '85
season. Each was derived by polling the reporters for each league
(one per city). The results are below, with number of first place
votes parenthesized.

NL East NL West AL East AL West

New York (9)	San Diego (8)	Detroit (5)	Chicago (8)
	Chicago (3)	Atlanta (4)	Toronto (4)	Kansas City (3)
Philadelphia	Los Angeles	Baltimore (3)	Minnesota (3)
	Montreal	Houston New York	Seattle
	Pittsburgh	Cincinnati	Boston (2)	California
St. Louis	San Fransisco	Cleveland	Oakland
					Milwaukee	Texas

Compare this, if you wish, with my personal predictions, posted
earlier:

	New York	Atlanta Detroit Chicago
	Chicago San Diego	Toronto Minnesota
	Pittsburgh	Los Angeles	Boston Oakland
	Philadelphia	Houston Baltimore	Kansas City
	Montreal	Cincinnati	New York	California
St. Louis	San Fransisco	Cleveland	Seattle
					Milwaukee	Texas

Does anyone out there agree that the Padres have a stronger bullpen this
year by adding Stoddard and Hoyt? Two of the Padre relievers from last year
who did a great job in the last half of the season and the playoffs, are
moving into the starting rotation. That is Dravecky and Hawkins. Just
because Atlanta got Sutter, I don't suspect too significant of a difference
in them. Any comments out there? Any Dodger fans, Atlanta?
