Anyone remember the cover of '84's baseball issue of Sports Illustrated?
I really can't imagine any Yankee fan being pleased with this development.
I mean there's no mystery any more, its just a question of when. Billy's
a special case, but aside from him, Steinbrenner has never insulted one
of the old-guard Yankees before and I for one feel somewhat resentful.
Yogi deserved much better. The team didn't get off to a good start like
every other year, but does George think that he's going to be able to count
on Martin forever to "light a fire" under the Yankees? The situation
has been a self-caricature of itself since the last Martin hiring.
My guess is that Steinbrenner first offered the job to Mantle, who
refused, and probable to Micheal and Torborg too. If this ends up
ruining my summer of baseball, I'll probably become as fickle as a
Red Sox fan.
