Wrong!! Zack Wheat was the second to last player to win a batting title without hitting a home run in that season. A *BIG* hint, the player is still active. jeff ...[seismo, brl-bmd, mcnc, we13]!rlgvax!jsg

(For this question, a walk > or sacrifice breaks the streak.) > Wasn't it Gorman Thomas, who in '75 or '76 struck out 10 times in a row, only to break the streak by grounding into a double play? I think he tied somebody else, maybe Reggie. Anyway, manager Del Crandall took Gorman out to lunch for ending his streak, and Gorman requested that he at least be given an asterisk after his name for the way he broke the string. Dave Van Handel

THE ANSWER: Sandy Koufax of the Brooklyn Dodgers struck out 12 times in a row in 1955. (Though Bill Hands of the Cubs fanned 14 times in a row in 1968 as did Juan Eichelberger of the Padres in 1980, but both of these streaks were mixed with sacrifices and walks.)
