[net.sport.baseball] 2 homeruns in one inning?

stuart@ada-uts.UUCP (05/06/85)

I can't find my trivia book. I need help!

Has a major league player ever hit two homeruns in one inning?
I assume it has happened. I have memories of reading that a
pitcher once did it.

The question was raised on Saturday when Jim Rice had the chance
to hit two homers in one inning against the A's.

While on the subject of hitters and innings, what is the most
productive inning a hitter has ever had?

Didn't Tony Cloninger ( of the Braves?) hit 2 grand slams in
one inning? Or was that in one game?

While an unusual occurence, it is not rare. The last one I remember
was Cliff Johnson for the Yankees against the Toronto Blue Jays around
1978. At the time, someone wrote a list of previous occurences,
somewhere around 15 names long.

I don't know about that, but there was a player in the Texas League in the
40's who hit THREE homeruns in one inning. I believe he played for Waco ( I
don't have my trivia book available at the moment, and his name escapes me ).
Seems as though he didn't do much when he came up with the Red Sox.

I think you're right. I do know that Jim Northrup of the Tigers hit grand
slams on consecutive at-bats in one game in 1968. He had a total of four
that year, including the one in Game 6 of the World Series that year.
Oops-I'm sorry, I just realized I didn't say what you were right ABOUT; I
believe Cloninger's were in one game, but not the same inning.

No cerebral signoff,

But to answer tour first question Ray Knight -then of Cincinatti-
hit two homeruns in the fifth inning against the Mets.

In 1980 Ray Knight (Cincinatti) hit two home runs in the fifth inning.
They were playing New York. Sorry, dunno who was pitching ...

Three Yankees, Joe DiMaggio, Joe Pepitone, and Cliff Johnson, have
hit two homers in the same inning.

As has been shown, many people have hit two homers in one inning.
There was also a game about 30 years ago where 3 or 4 people had
2 doubles in one inning. But only one person has THREE hits in
an inning, and only one has THREE RUNS in an inning. Who are these
two people. (Obvious hint: it happened in the same inning.)
