Here's some goodies for you stats freaks. Other months to follow as
they happen. Enjoy....

4/9	Rick Sutcliffe got his 15th consecutive regular-season win,
setting a team record; Ed Reublach had 14 in a row in 1909.
	(Cubs 2, Pirates 1)

4/9	Tom Seaver makes a record 15th Opening Game start, for which he
has a record of 7-1. Walter Johnson had 14 opening day starts.
	(White Sox 4, Brewers 2)

4/14	Phil Niekro got his 285th career win, tying Tony Mullane for
19th on the all-time victory list.
	(Yankees 2, Indians 1)

4/16	Jerry Koosman got 5 strikeouts, giving him 2,507 for his career;
this put him past Christy Mathewson into 17th place on the all-time
list. Dennis Eckersley, however, got 11 and won the game.
	(Cubs 1, Phillies 0)

4/19	Rusty Staub of the Mets became the 7th person to play in 2,900
major league games. He grounded out as a pinch hitter.
	(Mets 1, Phillies 0)

4/20	Phil Niekro won his 286th game, tying him with Robin Roberts for
18th place on the all-time list. On the same day, his brother Joe
	won his 194th.
	(Yankees 5, Indians 2)
	(Astros 8, Braves 1)

4/26	Buddy Bell of the Rangers became the 153rd person to get 2,000
hits in a career as he went 1 for 5 against Toronto.
	(Blue Jays 6, Rangers 5)

Orel Hershiser of the Dodgers pitched a 1-hitter and faced the minimum
27 batters while beating San Diego. Five days earlier, Hershiser beat
the Padres in San Diego with a 2-hit shutout.
	(Dodgers 2, Padres 0)

4/28	A big day in baseball -
Yogi Berra was fired as manager of the Yankees and replaced by
Billy Martin, who became the New York skipper for a 4th time,
an AL record (matched in the NL by Danny Murtaugh of the Pirates).
	(White Sox 4, Yankees 3)

Mickey Hatcher of the Twins went 4 for 5 and tied an AL record
for most consecutive hits over 2 nine-inning games with nine.
The last person to do this was Don Baylor for Baltimore in 1973.
The major league record for consecutive hits is 12 by Mike Higgins
of Boston in 1938 and by Walt Dropo of Detroit in 1952.
	(Twins 10, A's 1)

Fernando Valenzuela gave up a ninth-inning homer to Tony Gwynn of
the Padres and lost 1-0. It was the first earned run of the season
for Fernando, and came after a record 41.1 consecutive innings
without an earned run at the start of a season. The old record was
40.2 by Hooks Wiltse of the 1912 Giants. Despite his fine pitching,
Valenzuela only has a record of 2-3.
	(Padres 1, Dodgers 0)

The Mets and Pirates played a marathon 18 inning game, finally won
by the Mets. At one point in the 12th inning, the Pirates had 7
infielders when the Mets loaded the bases with no outs. Rusty Staub
of the Mets played rightfield against righthanded batters and left-
	field against lefties.
	(Mets 5, Pirates 4)

After being down 7-1, the Orioles came back to win 8-7 against the
Indians. After being knocked out of the game, Bert Blyleven of the
Indians made 2 obscene gestures to the crowd on his way to the
dugout. He subsequently received a suspension, which is on appeal.
	(Orioles 8, Indians 7)

4/30	Dale Murphy of the Braves had a 2-run double, giving him 29 RBIs for
the month of April. This tied the NL record set by Ron Cey in 1977.
	(Braves 8, Reds 4)

There were no rain outs for the entire month of April. Amazing.

BONUS FACT
----------

A strange event occurred on May 17th, 1979. Bruce Sutter, Bill Caudill,
Willie Hernandez, Donnie Moore and Ray Burris, who last year combined
for 40 victories, 129 saves and a 2.48 ERA, all came out of the Cubs'
bullpen in relief of starter Dennis Lamp. In 10 innings, the final score
was Phillies 23, Cubs 22.
