[net.sport.baseball] Mike Davis bats 7th?

ccrbrian@ucdavis.UUCP (Brian Reilly) (05/21/85)

I went to the A's game on Saturday in Oakland, and
being a Mets fan who does not follow the A's too closely,
was surprised to find that Mike Davis of the A's bats 7th in
the lineup. He is at or near the top of the league in average,
homers, rbi's, slugging percentage, hits, runs, extra base hits, etc.,
but he still bats 7th in the order. Is this a way to get better
pitches for him to hit, or are the A's saying that his
stats are just a fluke and by the end of the season he will
be a real 7th place hitter?

Has a team ever had their leading hitter in so many categories
bat below 5th in the order for a whole season? I expect
there have been a few hitters in the 7 or 8th places with high
averages, but nothing like Davis' season so far.

One other question - they don't use a golf cart to drag the
infield in Oakland. Is this common at other stadiums as well?
Does having 3 men do it by hand provide more jobs?

They use people at Wrigley Field. My guess is that the dragging of the
infield can be done a lot quicker with several people rather than using a
golf cart. As for your question about providing more jobs, after seeing how
many ground staff it takes to put down, or take up, the tarpaulin over the
infield, I'm sure that there are plenty of people that just sit there during
a game that are only there in case it rains!

They also use people to drag the infield at Cominsky Park (Boo Hiss) as well.

Go Cubs!
