The question concerning a pitcher winning a legal 9 inning game with 9 pitches leads me to believe that a pitcher could win a game, go nine innings, and not throw a pitch. First batter reaches base on 4 balks and is picked off. The next 26 batters do the same thing. No pitches are thrown. Is this possible? In the May 23rd San Francisco Chronicle, an article discussed possible ways to increase the offensive output in baseball. Mentioned were Charlie Finley's idea to put a runner on first at the start of every inning, designated hitters, designated runners, designated runners for the catcher and pitcher in high school play, and a rule in women's softball which puts a runner on second at the start of every extra inning. That is, if the game is tied at the end of regulation, each new inning starts with a runner on second base. With this rule, a pitcher could throw a perfect game and lose. Does Lindsey Nelson still do the Mets games for channel 9? Has his jacket selection improved?
