[net.sport.baseball] Enough of DH

cherson@fsleng.DEC (05/03/85)

I'd like to say just a few words about the DH rule. First of all, let it be
known that I've never approved of the DH from it's inception, I don't it has
put any "punch" into the game that wasn't there before. In fact the only
benefit I can see from it was to extend the careers of some famous one-way
players (think of it, Dick Stuart could have been the ultimate DH!).

But why is it when all the National League partisans jump up and down about the
Designated Hitter, you never hear them complain about plastic grass, phony turf
and those ugly symmetrical super tv studios, sometimes called stadiums. There
seem to be more of these abominations in the NL than the AL. They're trying to
destroy the one remaining true ballpark in the league, Wrigley Field.

I can't help remembering the '80 World Series, the battle of the phony-turfs.
I swear that Philly beat KC solely on the basis that U.L. Washington couldn't
"jump" higher for a ground ball than Ozzie.

I've seen both AL and NL games live and the only difference I could discern
was the DH. The DH is destined for the dustbin, the wind seems to be blowing
in that direction. You national leaguers, don't get so high and mighty, I
wouldn't waste my money on watching the Houston Astros (outside of Dickie Thon
who plays for them?) or the Giants.

As I said in an earlier article, while most change is deplorable,
some is more deplorable than others. What makes the DH unique is its
deplorability is that it changes the rules of the game, while the
other evils you list change the environment the game is played in.

First, you mean DeJesus, not Smith. At the time, he was a better than
average shortstop, but still no acrobat.

MET fans love grass, love Wrigley the way it is, & hate the b.s. dh rule.

Having more artificial turf in the NL still doesn't make sense out of the DH!

You obviously have seen about a dozen baseball games in your lifetime, since
a major difference is the quality strikeout pitching in the NL. The AL
has more 'finness' (yawwwwn) pitchers.

P.S. besides Dickie Thon, I may be right... well... I'll go out on a limb,
because I think Nolan Ryan plays for the Astros.

*** REPLACE THIS LINE WITH YOUR DH ***

First. A number of weeks ago someone used my account to state his opinion
about the DH. ( i.e. did not like DH but did not care as long as
both leagues were the same) That is not my opinion.

I come from St. Louis and grew up as a Cardinal fan and now live in
Chicago where I enjoy both Sox and Cubs (my wife is a die hard Sox fan and
calls me a taitor for watching the Cubs).

I like things the way they are AL-DH and NL-noDH.
It was great when Cards beat Harvey's Wallbaggers
with the DH (Iorg was alsome) in the world series. The leagues have other
differences (i.e., one leagues umpires call lower strikes than the other)
why no leave it alone. If baseball decides to change it fine but my
vote is to leave it alone.

There I got my two cents in.

Flame me if you want - I spoke my mind and I am going on vacation

If you do flame me - in advance -
