[net.sport.baseball] Ball parks and their teams

Don't forget Yankee Stadium. It still has its "death valley" in the
left-center/center field area. Before it was renovated, the longest distance
to the wall from the plate was something like 463 feet! The wall down the
right field line was around 291 feet! Ah, yes... the distinct shape of Yankee
stadium is a characteristic that I wish they didn't alter, although it still is
similar.

I agree with Dave about the fun in watching teams being built for their
ball park. I've always been a Yankee fan (not necessarily a Steinbrenner fan,
but always a Yankee fan) and one will notice the great lefty HR hitters of
Yankee history: Ruth, Gehrig, Mantle, Marris and more recently Reggie. Guys
like Nettles, Murcer and Gamble (none are Yankees any more) were always a
threat to pop one. On the other hand, I've seen guys like Winfield and Baylor
tag the ball over 400 feet to left-center only to fly out.

The Yankees like to staff good lefty pitchers to cause other teams to
bat right-handed more. Often they had four lefties in the starting rotation
during home stands. I've also seen 8 or 9 left-handed batters in the starting
lineup (if the opposing pitcher is a right-handed one, of course) numerous
times.

Unfortunately, since I moved to North Carolina I haven't been able to
follow the Yankees much, so my information is a couple of years old. All we
get here is Ted Turner's Braves (the self-proclaimed "America's Team") and I'm
not much of a National League fan at all. Its a very sad situation (boo hoo).

Oh, well ... someone talk about the Yankees once in a while.

P.S.- Phil Rizzuto should be in the Hall of Fame.

Let it be said again; for it makes for exciting home team baseball!

And let us Yankee fans not forget the rival Dodgers and Cardinals of
years ago with manicured baselines for excellent bunters and runners like
Wills and Brock. Speed baseball!; as Mr. S is trying to install in New York.
He should not forget the dimensions of his ballpark and keep a roster loaded
with a few more lefty power hitters.

I'd like to reiterate that statement: ALWAYS a Yankee fan; not
necessarily a Steinbrenner fan, although I can't help sometimes giving the
man credit for some of the things he does to light a fire under the team
members. But before I get many flames from all of the net members, I will
say, if he continues to light fires as such, he will probably burn the team.

It will be my pleasure Dan!

How Phil has not been elected to the Hall all of these years can
only make me believe he must have made a lot of enemies. I honestly believe if
you look at his career stats and performance over the years and let us not
forget his contribution to baseball as a bunting coach and announcer (oh well
he is slightly! prejudice for which team he roots for), you can't deny the
man the rightful place he deserves at Cooperstown. I'm looking for feedback
on this subject from all you fans that are more neutral about this.
I, for one, will not try to say that I'm not biased about this topic.

GO! YANKEES!

They brought in the fences this year. Left field and left center aren't like
they used to be. I guess Uncle George got tired of seeing Winfield and Baylor
hit those 420 foot outs. I don't recall exactly how much. After he fired
Billy (no, asshole that's not until next month), I mean Yogi, I switched
my allegiance totally toward the Mets. Unless the Yankees keep winning -:)

Maybe Phil *does* deserve to be in the hall of fame based on his contributions
as a player, but unless you are a rabid Yankee fan (I'm a Red Sox fan and have
*always* detested the Yankees, who are way overpublicized. Reminds me of
the Dallas Cowboys, but that flame belongs in another newsgroup) then listening
to Phil announce the games is intolerable. He's as bad as Johnny Most must have
been for non-Celtics fans.

Go Sox! Go Tigers! Go O's! Go Jays! ANYONE but the Yankees. Sorry, guess I'm
not exactly neutral either.

I second the motion. Rizzuto is an out & out homer. At least his
broadcasting partner (Bill White) can keep a level head. I've no
doubt that Phil calls 'em as he see 'em --- it just that he uses his
heart, not his eyes, to watch the game. One can be rabidly enthusiastic
about one's team without letting it distort your reporting (e.g. Harry
Caray).

I hate the Yankees yet I don't mind Phil Rizzuto. He is infinitely
more tolerable than Bob Cousy broadcasting Celtic basketball (and I
am a Celtic fan).
