[] I've just heard that the Philies are putting Mike Schmitt on first base to play a minor leaguer in third. Did I hear it right ? Supposedly, This will put more left-handed power into the line-up (I guess the new 3rd base man is left handed). But isn't Philies' current 1st basemen (?? Corcorran) also left handed ? What about Greg Gross (he usually pinch hits - but also play 1st base pretty good) who also bats left. I can't figure out why Philies are doing this. Is it an act of desparation ? I used to follow Phillies very closely until a few years ago when they started to change the players so much that, now, I don't even know half the players. I probably know more player from LA or Pittsberg (and I am from Phily:->) Marcus S. Yoo

> I've just heard that the Philies are putting Mike Schmitt on first base to > play a minor leaguer in third. Did I hear it right ? Yes. The Phillies have a promising young third baseman with a half a year's experience at AAA (Rick Schu) that they are rushing up to the big leagues. Why they think this will correct for their errors of bringing up a promising shortstop (Jeltz) and a promising outfielder (Russell, who they stuck at first base) too rapidly is beyond me. >....................................................Supposedly, This will > put more left-handed power into the line-up (I guess the new 3rd base man > is left handed). Supposedly, the Phillies wish to have TWO top flight left-handed hitters on the bench (Corcoran and Gross). It seems a luxury the Phillies are ill-advised to pursue. Why weaken the lineup to strengthen the bench. Put Corcoran back at first, and platoon him with Wockenfuss! > .................Is it an act of desparation ? Yes. The front office appears to panicking (prematurely, in my opinion). > I used to follow Phillies very closely until a few years ago when they started > to change the players so much that, now, I don't even know half the players. > I probably know more player from LA or Pittsberg (and I am from Phily:->) As the '83 Phillies included such aging players as Rose, Morgan, and Maddox, substantial change was inevitable. It became massive change due to Lefebvre's injury and the inane (unless Mike Diaz proves to be the next Johnny Bench, or at least Tony Pena) trade-away of Matthews. I think part of the reason for the switch is that Schmidt has already made 9 errors this year, and certainly made his share last year when the Phillies infield were booting mass quantities of chances. Things may not get better, though. The new 3rd baseman, Rick Schu, has made 11 errors in 41 games in the minors before being called up, although most were at shortstop. -- Call-Me: Pete Cottrell, Univ. of Md. Comp. Sci. Dept. <> I believed the Phillies traded Mike Diaz to Pittsburgh for another minor league player.
