Going into the 70's, Sandy Koufax led the major leagues with the most strikeouts in a single season with 382. Who topped that record, in what year, what team was he on, and how many strikeouts did he have that year? Jim Hendricks

Without digging back into the record books, its a man that will soon become the most prolific strike out artist in the history of the game. A man that had a 100+mph fastball and an excellent curve to compliment that fastball. The author of 5 no-hitters and a couple of dozen 1, 2, and 3 hitters . I'm speaking of none other than Nolan Ryan who was then with the California Angels. The number of strike outs for that year, I believe, was 384 and I think the year was 1974. That same year he pitched something like 320 innings, a remarkable feat for a man with that kind of velocity. In my opinion, he is a definite Hall of Fame candidate when he retires but he may not make it solely on his poor career won/lost record. Gene Ochrymowich

Is this news group trivial? It seems that's all that is here. Maybe baseball is the trivial item. halb

In response to "Who led the AL in home runs in 1972 and how many?", I received one response. I unfortunately lost the name but he said that it was Richie (Dick) Allen of the White Sox with 37. He may actually be correct as I did not check. I believe that it was Bill Melton also of the White Sox with 32. Can anyone verify this? Bill Melton? Ha Ha. But he DID win it. It just may have been in 1971 or 1973.

Bill Melton had 31 HRs that year. NDK

Answers will be posted in a few weeks. 1) Who was the last man to catch a major league game pitched by Babe Ruth? 2) Off what pitcher did Carlton Fisk hit his memorable homer in the sixth game of the 1975 Series? 3) Off what pitcher did Hank Aaron hit his 714th home run? His 715th? Who caught his 715th? Who sang the national anthem at that game? 4) Off what pitcher did Vic Wertz hit his blast in the 1954 World Series (the one Mays caught)? 5) What do the following players have in common? Rod Kanehl, Dave Kingman, Joel Youngblood, Don Zimmer? 6) Five players have hit World Series home runs both as American Leaguers and National Leaguers. Name them. 7) What two pitchers combined to snap Pete Rose's 44 game hitting streak? 8) Speak of hard luck! This man gave up just two runs on five hits, but he was the loser as he was going against Don Larsen on the day of his perfect game. Name him. 9) Everyone knows about the "Shot Heard 'Round the World" which gave the Giants the 1951 pennant (2 games to 1 in the playoff over the Dodgers). The giants also won the first game of that series. How? 10) Who was the last man to steal home in a World Series?

(this line as empty as Garagiola's head...) Trivia q: What do Roger Craig and Norm Sherry have in common, other than being pitching coaches for the two teams in the WS? Hint: Roger Craig had some ups (World Series victory with Brooklyn), but also some LOWS in his career as a player...

Just guessing about people with no minor league experience, but Jose Oquindo was very young. And was Bob Feller Gooden's idol ? Now, Down to real trivia. What semi-legendary infielder was traded from the 1899 Cleveland Spiders to St Louis, resulting in a new rule that forbade any man or group to own more than 1 team ? Hint: His brother Monte played for teams in4 different major leagues in Philadelphia.

I'm not sure who started all this trivia crap on the NET, but quite frankly I'm tired of it. I don't mind trivia usually. In fact I like the kind that asks realistic questions like which team has had the most Cy Young winners or who was the rookie of the year in '52, but I hate the kind of ridiculous questions that have popped up lately about throwing 9 pitches in a 9 inning game or how to drive in 5 runs with a single at bat or was that a single plate appearance. I thought this newsgroup was for something else, at least it seemed so last year. Why can't we discuss things that are happening now. Like what about Rick Sutcliffe? Is he still injured? How long was/is he out? With all the Cub fans and Mets fans, I would have thought his injury might have been something to talk about. Or is it just too early in the year? Me, I'm a Braves fan. I don't have nothin' to talk about. I do have a baseball related question that came to mind during a recent Braves rain delay. How many ballclubs put advertisements on the tarp that covers the infield during a rain delay. The reason I ask is because Morton Salt has their familiar "When It Rains, It Pours" slogan on the Braves tarp. Is it common throughout the league to have advertisements or is that Ted's idea? -- Roger Pannell ARPA: pannell%dosadi.DEC@DECWRL.ARPA, pannell%dosadi.DEC@Purdue-Merlin.ARPA UUCP: {allegra, decvax, ucbvax}!decwrl!rhea!dosadi!pannell

I, for one, would much rather see questions which challenge readers' understanding of the rules/game of baseball then worry about baseball clubs' advertisements. I think YOU'RE the one who should think about what this group is for. Sigh.
