/* */ Well, if you took the Mets and 2 TD's last night (6/11), you LOST. The Phillies trounced the Mets by an amazing score of 26-7. The Phils had 27 hits in the game, 10 of which were doubles. They obviously left very few men on base. Von Hayes became the first player in history to homer twice in the first inning of a game - he hit a solo shot his first time up, and followed that with a grand slam in his next at-bat. He is the 13th player in major league history to homer twice in one inning. This must have been a wild one to watch ( I don't have WOR on my cable system ). In other news, the Jays ended their 3-game slide with a 4-1 win in 11 over the Yankees. Willie Randolph dropped a throw from third on what probably would have been a double play to end the inning, and the winning run scored. Buck Martinez blooped a single later in the inning to add the last 2 runs. Speaking of the Jays - what a race there would be in the AL East without them! (-: (-: As of 6/12/85 Detroit 6 back Baltimore 6 1/2 Boston 7 Yankees 8 out Milwaukee 8 1/2 Cleveland who cares (-: I heard a rumor that Joe Altobelli may be heading out the door in Balti- more; anyone else heard anything about this? Not to be contradictory, but I read that the feat has been performed 21 times, twice by Willie McCovey, which to me implies 20 different players. Anyone know for sure? > >I heard a rumor that Joe Altobelli may be heading out the door in Balti- >more; anyone else heard anything about this? > These rumors have been floating around the last few days, and seem to be about to come true. The Orioles have lost 5 straight to the Red Sox and the Tigers over the last week and have fallen from 2nd place to 4th. I heard that Earl Weaver was in O's owner Edward Bennet Williams' D.C. offices today, and during tonight's game with the Tigers on the tube came the statement that there would be no announcement on Altobelli's future until the team returned to Baltimore (tomorrow, Thursday 6/13). When I see the O's tomorrow night on 3-buck night against Milwaukee, I fully expect to see Earl in his old #4 uniform. Maybe he'll even get thrown out for his first game back!! There are also rumors of roster changes. The O's are in desparate need of a second-baseman: Jack Perconte of Seattle has been described as Balto-bound for much of the season, but lately the talk has been of Alan Wiggins, who has been medically cleared to play. However, the Padres' Ballard Smith has said that Wiggins will not play for the rest of the season, if ever again, for SD. This is a violation of the agreement with the players' union, so the best move by the Padres is to deal him and avoid legal hassles. I think I heard out of the corner of my ear that Wiggins was actually in town today working out, but don't hold me to that. Also don't be surprised to see Dan Ford and Joe Nolan released by the O's. Ford has never been real popular in Baltimore (they got him from the Angels for Doug DeCinces, one of the poorer trades the O's have made) and has played very sparingly this season (something like 75 AB, 1 HR, 1 RBI, .187 BA). Nolan is a catcher who has informed the club that his knees are too damaged to ever catch again. He has done ok over the years, and has pinch-hit a lot this year, but you gotta fill the roster slot with someone who can contribute more. Well, you asked for an elaboration! -- Call-Me: Pete Cottrell, Univ. of Md. Comp. Sci. Dept. UUCP: {seismo,allegra,brl-bmd}!umcp-cs!pete CSNet: pete@umcp-cs ARPA: pete@maryland
