While watching the Monday Night Baseball game last night I noticed a
maple leaf on the Blue Jay uniform along with the blue jay. I also
realize that the pro hockey team from Toronto is the Maple Leafs.
Can one of you knowledgeable Canadians and/or Blue Jay fans fill me
in on the significance of the maple leaf. Thanks.
Although I am a Yankee fan, I still think the Blue Jays got what it
takes. Good luck Toronto!

Thanks Well it depends what sort of explanation you want. The maple leaf is the central item of the canadian flag; the Blue Jays are a Canadian team, ergo the Blue Jays have a maple leaf on their logo. If you are wondering why Expos don't show a similar sense of patriotism it may be because of a general anti-nationalist sentiment in Quebec. Basically the reason for the Canadian flag on the Blue Jays logo is the same as the reason for its presence on the Canadian-made robot arm on the Space Shuttle : the Canadian Identity Neurosis. Andre Vellino University of Toronto P.S. See you at Exhibition Stadium (yuch!) for the World Series.
