Can someone please explain to me the rational behind letting the batter try for first base if the catcher drops a third strike? It seems to be a rule designed to help out the batting team, but the batter seldom makes it to first, via this rule. Seems like an anachronism from days gone by, when maybe there was some other no longer existing rule which went with it.
