[net.sport.baseball] Rickey Henderson vs. the favorite

ogre@mhuxl.UUCP (LO COCO) (06/27/85)

A few weeks ago I read an article from someone who
described a fantasy game which included Backman and some other
famous Mets. In this scenario there was a walk to the lead-off
batter, a stolen base, sacrifice to third, and a sacrifice fly
ball to the outfield. Well, if the person relating this
fantasy game had just limited their description of this event to
the event, I really could not get on their case. But, they didn't,
and went on to criticize the type of ball that the Yankees were
playing (which at that time was justified). Now it's my turn, but
I'll refrain from criticizing a team that ended the Cubs 13 game
losing streak yesterday.

NEW SCENARIO (Taken from last night's scorecard by this author):

Rickey Henderson leads off the bottom of the first with a sharp single
to left on the first pitch. In the process of working out the count,
Randolph eventually strikes out, but Henderson steals second on the same
pitch. Before you can neatly enter all this information in the scorecard,
Henderson steals third, and Mattingly hits a sacrifice fly to Lynn in
centerfield.
Later in the third inning Henderson steals second again only to be
cut down by Scott McGregor trying to steal third again (oh well this wasn't
a fantasy). In the sixth Henderson leads off the inning with a walk,
steals second (for his fourth and final steal of the game), Randolph flys
out to right, but Mattingly singles in Henderson from second. By this time
we have a real exciting 3-2 lead by the Orioles over the Yankees and it
stays this way until the bottom of the ninth.
Thanks for all you provided to this game Rickey, the rest is left to
other Yankee heroes of this evening. Winfield leads off the ninth with a
single, Baylor moves Winfield to second on an error by the second baseman
(Sakata), which also blows a double play possibility. Thanks again to
Sakata, he muffs an attempt by the relief pitcher, Aase, to pick off Winfield,
sending him to third and Moreno (running for Baylor) to second. Griffey enters
as a pinch hitter only to be intentionally walked to load the bases. Tippi
Martinez enters the game in relief of Aase getting Bradley as a pinch hitter to
pop out to Ripken at short. Now the excitement: Meacham (just starting to come
out of a slump) laces a broken bat single to left center scoring Winfield and
Moreno. Yanks win 4-3. Thanks again Rickey, and thanks Meacham, it was a great
game to witness.

	END OF SCENARIO.

The point of this article was to show that exciting games can come from
the American League and from the Yankees who have seemed to turn part of their
game around. They still, in my opinion, lack a little of what Billy calls the
ability to execute the basics (fundamentals) of the game. But it sure is
exciting to watch a speed demon who just happens to be leading the league in
average and stolen bases. He's one hell of a ball player.
Baseball is tremendous fun for me. I happen to be a Yankee fan which a
lot of people are not. I'm actually glad about that because it makes for inter-
esting discussions here on the net. Good luck to the teams of you fans out
there; we have a hell of a season left. Who knows the Mets* just might make it.
(I feel the flames now)(*-or any other team)
Sorry for being long winded but the net has been real quiet lately.
I cast my vote for Rickey for the All-Star team, and in the vain of what
David Rubin volunteered, if everyone out there wishes to mail me their AL
ballots, I'll tabulate them.
