[net.sport.baseball] A boomin' June for Pete

michaelf@ISM780.UUCP (06/27/85)

Pedro Guerrero just hit his 14th homer of this
month. He's been clobbering them. Does Willie Mays
have the record for one month at 17?

Can anyone tell me if the Pirates have lost more
one-run teams than anyone so far? Does anyone care?
Pretty cool about Komisar Pete U not allowing the Bucs to
be moved out of P'Burg. Tony Pena is the best CATCHER.

Was I correct in hearing Vin Scully saying that
Gary Templeton "doesn't move like he's 250 pounds"?
He's not my brother but he's not that heavy is he??

P.S. It would be a good idea to to stock up on Dwight
Gooden cards but I wouldn't trade one for a Fernando
	   Valenzuela.

I'm not sure, but Guerrero's 15th of June, hit in his last at bat of
the month, broke the old record of 14 for most homers in the month of
June, previosly held by Ralph Kiner and Mike Schmidt.

Incidentally, the Mets broke the record for most runs in the 19th
inning when they rallied for five in the top of the 19th in Thursday
night's/Friday morning's game in Atlanta. And at 4:00 am when it was
over, the fireworks show went on as promised!

No, it's not cool. Fact is, Pittsburgh has given the team miserable
support over the years, even though over that period the Pirates were
one of the most successfuly franchises on the field. If the fans
support a team, I'm dead set against a move, but that doesn't mean
that a franchise must be chained to a town that doesn't care too much
for big league baseball.

Finally, if by CATCHER, you mean we restrict ourselves to defensive
considerations, you are half right. Pena is the best at cutting off a
running game, due in no small measure to skill of the Pirate staff,
but still probably has the best arm. Carter covers a little more ground,
and probably calls a better game, and Carter and Parrish are
substantially better offensively. If only Pena was a bit more
selective at the plate...
