Just thought I'd mention some changes made to the NL All-Star team (the one that the (yeeccch!) masses voted on) recently made. Andujar has withdrawn from the All-Star game. Joaquin was evidently mortified that Dick Williams was strongly considering starting Hoyt because Hoyt "knew" the AL hitters (hey, Dick, doesn't that mean that AL hitters "know" Hoyt?!?). Andujar is apparently convinced that he is by far the most deserving (I don't agree), has been unappreciated the past few years (underappreciated would be more accurate), and that in a choice between Hoyt and Andujar (Gooden pitched a complete game last night), there really is no choice (I agree). Rather than wait it out and let pressure build on Williams, Andujar took his pail and went home. I suppose it's reassuring that boys, as well as men, play this boys' game. Williams snarfed up the opportunity to replace Andujar (no chance for Joaquin reconsidering) and chose Ron Darling (9-2, 2.5 ERA) to replace him. Pedro Guerrero, the most devastating offensive player in the NL the past month and a half, has a bad back (out 2-4 weeks), and was replaced by Glenn Wilson. Wilson's stats aren't overpowering EXCEPT for his RBI total; the latter is probably inflated by Schmidt's poor start: Wilson is coming up with more runners on base than he otherwise would expect. Gary Carter injured his knee on Saturday, and has just been scrubbed (replacement unnamed as of this moment) after examination by Astro doctors. More critical, today he will be examined by Met doctors, who will determine if surgery is needed. If so, Carter will be lost for six weeks to the Mets. Now I am aware that most net readers expect Tony Pena to start in his place, but I think Ozzie Virgil is having a better year. David Rubin {allegra|astrovax|princeton}!fisher!david
