Now that the strike seems certain, it might turn out to be a blessing in
disguise for true baseball fans. When was the last time you attended a
minor league game? Well, now is the time. AAA has quality players, some
who could play every day in the majors but who need a little more seasoning.
And in general the minors offer:

-- small crowds, ballparks where you can get right down to the players
 -- agressive young players
 -- grass and sunshine

The New York Times, Sunday 4 Aug., had a nice piece on some of the minor
league teams within easy driving distance of NYC. Teams with long-standing
tradition, like the Pawtucket Red Sox, Toledo Mud Hens, Albuquerque Dukes,
have loyal followings already. And I hear that Old Orchard Beach, Maine
(Maine Guides -- AAA affiliate of the Indians) is the most beautiful
ballpark in the US (Doubleday Field in Cooperstown included). So lets
get out and enjoy some good baseball, the way it's meant to be played.
