[net.sport.baseball] Is Tonight the Last Night of the Season

schneider@vlnvax.DEC (08/05/85)

I am greatly disheartened by what I have been hearing. It seems that
the two sides have made little progress and the strike is imminent. And
its not that we don't all know that once the situation is desperate
enough that a compromise of sorts will be forged. Right now I reserve
some sympathy for the owners, but once there is an agreement and the
field is again filled I won't care about who got what. I just want
there to be baseball; boxscores in the morning; games on the tube at
night; weekend afternoons at the ballpark. Its not too much to ask.

And who gets hurt here. The principals involved (owners and players)
should have a short-term tarnish. I will have a short-term agony and a
long-term tarnish. Woe to care about statistics! Its not fair because
I will still be a baseball fan; they won't lose like me, with nothing
to strike back with, no recourse at all.

Sure we can try to boycott or something, act casual when baseball returns,
pretend we don't care, but it won't matter. They've got me hook, line and
sinker, and probably a bunch of you too. To add to my frustration, this
is my first summer with cable TV. I can watch the Yankees just like before
I moved from New Jersey six years ago, and its been great. I should
have known it couldn't last.

Ahh, the point is its frustrating to be powerless.

Well we can always resort to trivia to tie us over:

1- Name the only pitcher to play in every game f a 7-game World Series.

2- The Yankees lost the 1976 WS in 4 straight to the Reds. Who hit their
only home run? (hint - a weak hitting platoon player)

3- About 7 years ago or more< everyone thought the Expos had an outfield
that would be together for 10 to 15 years. Needless to say this hasn't
   come true. Who are they?

4- And who remembers the Tiger's centerfielder who was forced to come in and
play shortstop in the '68 WS?

Don't post the answers. Send them to me and I'll let everyone know soon
enough.
